The special library event will also include a slideshow presentations and other hands-o- n items like feathers and talons. The presentation is part of the Salt Lake County Library System's Summer reading program revolving around the theme 'Catch a Dragon by the Tail." During the middle ages, hawks were prized and admired and used in many ways. In addition, the hawk and other birds of prey have been captured in many books of the middle age period as being mystical and magical. The summer reading program continues through Aug. 17. Children and youth are encouraged to read books for prizes, which will conclude with a celebration for participants. Other events this summer at the Magna Library will include a hands-o- n demonstration on Fantasy Origami, presented by Ginger Brakke, who will teach partiepants how to make dragons and magic wands by folding paper. The program will be held on July 20 at 1 a.m. upset with county plans Bv PEBBI OLSON Editor When the former County Commission approved a new recreation center for Magna it was with the understanding that the original facility would be used to recoup the cost. Without input from the Magna community, County planners made a decision to surplus the property and subdivide it for 18 single family homes. 'The planning commission has told the county that it will not endorse such a plan at this time," said Area Councilman Greg Schulz. The last thing Magna needs right now is more cracker-boaffordable housing." The county already demolished the old recreation center in preparation for the subdivision, which has also made members of the community and Area Council upset. 'There were so many things that building could have been used for," Schulz said. "The county should have approached the community first before making those kinds of decisions." x, The lack of communication results from Magna's change to a Township, which gives the community power to control planning and zoning issues. "What we really need in that space is a park, not affordable housing," Schulz said. The area, near 9100 West and 3000 South is already inundated with small homes that are in disrepair. Sewer and water lines in the area are old and inadequate to meet the current demand and would not be able to accommodate additional housing without replacing the infrastructure. While the county has not identified a developer for the property, the original plan was to sell the parcel to recoup expenses in building the current recreation center located on 8400 West. The Magna Area Council is expected to discuss the situation at its monthly meeting Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Magna Fitness Center. Members of the community are invited to attend and provide input on community issues during the meeting. . re |
