Av - L After four trial races, the flag has been waved for the hugely popular Midnight drag races to go full throttle ahead at Rocky Mountain (j Raceway. The West Valley Planning Commission gave approval of the Midnight Drag races at its meeting last Wednesday after a series of races and studies had been completed. "They wanted to see how' loud it was going to be, how the curfew would work and to make sure there was no street racing after everyone left the facility," said Callie Birdsall, spokeswoman for RMR. "The study was to evaluate the impacts on the community," said Kevin Hooper, city zoning administrator. "We were measuring the impacts on noise, traffic and lighting. The engineers found that there was no noise coming from the park that you wouldn't have driving by your house." It was further found that the Midnight drags produced less noise than regular traffic on Parkway Boulevard. The Planning Commission agreed to allow RMR to extend its business hours to run the Midnight drag races ' until 2 a.m. "We can go in different parts of the office 20 fee( away and not hear noise from the racing," Birdsall said. While RMR has hired additional security and employees to help with parking, security has not been needed to control crowds. "What we're finding is that West Valley police and Salt f ; i Camaro 45. Magna Area Council -- 1 -- "We're trying to make it a fun place to be for the teens who come out," Birdsall said. "Many of die kids who are coming didn't even know we were here before we started the midnight drag races. Now they're getting more interested in the other events we have going on. RMR will hold the midnight drags about every other week to coincide with its Big O street Legal series. The next race will be on Friday, July 12. Lake County Sheriffs officers assigned to drag racing enforcement ends up coming out to the raceway because they're not finding any dragracing going on in the streets," Birdsall said. Friday, in the last of four trial races granted by West Valley City, more than 300 street racers once again took at RMR in to the quarter-mil- e front of a large crowd of more than 5,000 spectators. Crowds of similar size packed each of the three previous midnight drag races. "When we first started we had an idea that there were going to be a lot of cars," Birdsall said. "We didn't think we'd have so many spectators." In addition to the drag racing, the midnight drags also feature live entertainment as well as music provided by a DJ. Bv DE8BI OLSON 50 Over Rover...
