The Drug Court is available only to d offenders charged with crimes. Utah's first Drug Court program began six years ago in Third District Court. Salt Lake County's Drug Court began eighteen months ago in the winter of 2000. The Drug Court concept began humbly enough in Miami in 1989. Five years later there were just a dozen. Today the number of Drug Courts across the nation numbers more than Workman, Mayor of Salt Lake County, delivered the keynote address on May 2, Their stories are similar. They are drug abusers. Now they have turned their lives around with the help of family, friends and an aggressive rehabilitation program operated by Salt Lake County's Justice Court. Today they celebrate success with formal graduation ceremonies from the Drug Court Program. Nancy Workman calls for changes on Hogle Zoo Board Salt Lake County Mayor Nancy Workman is calling for changes to the way Hogle Zoo does business. "Since the county's Zoo, Arts and Parks fund provides the biggest infusion of public money, we want consistent and accurate reporting on how ZAP money is spent," says Mayor Workman. The ZAP fund contributed $1.9 million to Hogle Zoo last year. It's quite evident, says the Mayor, "The County should have representation on the Board." County policy also directs Zoo audits will be reviewed by the County's independent auditing firm to verify the information on qualifying expenditures. "Zoo, Arts and Parks is a marvelous program. Through ZAP the people of Salt lake County have had new opportunities to experience the arts and enjoy expanded recreational facilities," says Mayor Workman. "It's incumbent on the Zoo to achieve the same high performance and accountability standards we ask from the arts organizations and recreation programs of the county." Besides the Zoo's $1.9 million, the Zoo, Arts and Parks program contributed $8 million to arts and cultural organizations last year The County's Drug Court gets no state or federal financial support. It is funded totally with local funds and is squeezed into Judge Acomb's regular and another $4.6 million for new County recreation facil- calendar every Thursday afternoon.
