Bailey's philosophy to teaching is simple: "Every kid can learn," he said. He also thinks that parents and teachers need to "lead in a manner that shows students you care about them. They may not always agree with you, but at least they'll listen." Bailey says that over the years he has had experiences with students he has worked with who, as they've gotten older, have expressed appreciation for his encouragement and example. Bailey said that is what it's all about - helping to memorial plaques of Kennecot Employees and Magna residents, to a cement form at the Downtown Veteran! Memoral Square. For nine years he taught social studies at Kearns Junior High, then another years at Bennion. Afterward Bailey went to Bonneville Junior High where he served as the school's assistant principal for four years, and then as its principal for another four and a half years. Bailey was approached earlier this year by the school district about moving from Bonneville to another school, but said he wasn't interested unless the move was to a "new" junior high. So much for fate. After taking a tour of the school Bailey said he "fell in love with the building and the community." He soon thereafter turned in his application and the rest is history - or soon will be. His appointment as Principal of the Scott M. Bailey already has the first year planned out. "We want to develop a school culture," he said. "We want to get acquainted. Academically, we want to look at baseline skills and het-sai- , then develop an action plan. What are we? What is a Matheson Tiger? We want to find these things out." The Matheson junior high has features that are new to Utah junior high schools. For instance, it has six computer labs whereas many other junior highs only have one or two.
