Richard Armour -- r m litis is my annual Mother's Day column, have great respect for mothers and women in general. Sometimes the ladies get all the best of it. Like in athletics for example. I know this guy who spent 10 years teaching his kid how to play baseball. He pitched batting practice to the kid until his arm fell off. he built a batting cage in the garage and parked his car outside. He bought his son the best equipment that money could buy. He took him to those early morning Saturday practices. He raked the field. He was the team's best fund raiser. He ran the , snack bar. He hit fun goes until it was dark. At last, the pro scouts signed the boy and put him on television. When he went on camera, ha said, Hi Mom". Another dad wanted his boy to be a boxer. He worked out daily with his son; sparing, road work,' shadow boxing, even the heavy bag. He punched and counter punched. He learned the "jab, the "hook", the "over hand right", and how to demonstrate them all. It took my friend 20 years to get the kid a meaningful bout. The would be pugilistic pion got blocked out cold in the first round. When he came to, he said, "Hi Mom." Theres an old Russian proverb the goes like this: "Women can do everything. Men can do the rest." I think a lot of women and even some mothers have read this proverb from Ukraine. I am convinced that many of them believe it In fact, it's there rally cry. The one they take into battle. "Women can do everything." I used to consider myself a pretty good barbecue man. You know, an apron on the patio, big steaks, and lots of briquettes.
