Thanks to the dedication to our children and the hard work of individuals such as Kim Blanchard and the excellent counseling staff at the school, many students had the opportunity to do student interns at several of our local businesses. Parents or legal guardians may sign for their children ages 5 18 to have cards and may now choose a "restricted" status for children's cards. The Magna Library has over 88,000 items available for the public to check out, including a special section for materials in "espanol". Kennard on behalf of the Utah Sheriffs Association. One thousand dollar scholarships will be presented to Cynthia Archuleta, Salt Lake County; Sarah Bemis, Magna; Timothy Lowry, South Jordan; and Jamie Su'a, West Jordan, These four students are among 3 receiving scholarships from the statewide association. The Utah Sheriffs Association is a 1 organization with hundreds of members including Sheriffs, other law enforcement officials and citizens throughout the state. The association provides the scholarships as one of its many public service programs. David Stevens, Principals and assistant principal Dave Rettie were in attendance to show their support for these talented students. Steven K. Scott was the guest speaker for the evening. As the author of a couple of successful books, he offered some specific strategies and techniques that would allow the students to make their dreams reality. Sandra Clayson has spearheaded the event for many years and each time the event gets better and better. 1 truly appreciate the time and talent she offers the students fo the Granite School District. We believe in service. Applications are due each year in March, they are chosen in April for that year. Scholarships are then awarded for the fall session. Some of the students related that the experience increased their desire to pursue a career in the field of their interest, however, students like Ilumera Khanani stated that although she liked kids, working in the education field was not what she wanted to do now, instead she was going to seek a career in interior design at Salt Lake Community College. She had worked as an intern at a local elementary school. Jones interned at A Ginger Vet and found that she was going to continue her education to become a vet, but she wanted to work with the bigger animals. Each student had a portfolio displayed, which showed the hard work they had completed as part of the program. A special thanks to all the supportive businesses in our community that allowed these students to get a glimpse of the careers that are available to them. As Kim Blanchard stated, "Our future will be brighter." Thanks to a grant from Senator Ed Mayne, Fremont Elementary's "Let's Dance Club"showcased their talents on May 2.
