Show I 1 The Magna TimeAVet Valley New, March 28, 20027 Business v i I 3 I Energy challenge US gov. to give $30 billion in grants The Customer Energy Challenge, launched in May, offered credits to customers on their bills in June, July, August and September. The Challenge allowed customers to save twice - first from the reduced energy use and second from a credit for savings at 10 percent and 20 percent thresholds. Customers could qualify on each of four eligible billing periods during the summer, and calculations of average daily kilowatt-hou- r usage were made against the same period from the previous year. "We can't thank our customers enough, for stepping up to die challenge," Utah Power Executive Vice President Bill Landels said. "Further, we know that many customers have made changes in the way they use electricity and will be able to reap the benefits of more efficient use for the years to come." Customers began receiving credits the first week in June. The total number of customers receiving credits, dollars paid and energy saved were verified through an independent audit and they show dramatic results. The Challenge was one of a number of programs under Utah's "Do the Bright Thing" campaign that helped educate customers about the regional electricity supply shortage and provided tangible ways that customers could participate in reducing demand. Programs including a school-base- d "Let's Do the Bright Thing" educational program that put energy action kits into the hands of 5,200 students and a general awareness campaign helped customers save energy. enerFinancing and on-ligy exchanges for commercial and industrial customers and a compact fluorescent bulb giveaway which will run across the state into the spring, and booklets full of advice for residential customers are still available. With an economy that remains unpredictable, and a need for even greater economic development on all fronts, the federal government is more willing than it ever has been before to give to fellow Americans grant money for a wide variety of business and personal needs. Most people never apply for a government grant. Why? Probably because they somehow feel it isn't for them, feel there's too much red tap, or simply don't know who to contact. The fact is, however, that people from all walks of life do receive free government grant money and other fits from the government. If you watch late-nigTV, you've probably seen plenty of infomercials about grants is not an easy process - it takes time. However, the descriptions, eligibility requirements, available funds and contact information, and according to Mr. Liraz, "All the information a visitor needs to answer the question: Is there government money for me? Is there?" Liraz said. The site also features a grant writing tutorial. "We don't want people to have misconception about federal grants though," Liraz adds. "The dollar amounts of grants and the time it takes to receive the money vary. Applying for and receiving scope of resources available is amazing."
