Show 'Warren i 4 Tha Magna TimetAVett Valley Newt, March 28, 2002 School Anne of Green Gables, excels numbers. While not going into all the detail of the Montgomery books, Anne of Green Gables, The Musical, takes smppits of Anne's life, trom her happiest, when the Cuthberts decide to keep her, to the embarrassing, when she breaks a chalkboard over the head of Gilbert, played by Kris I leywood, to the emotional when Anne, Matthew and Manila played by Alison Jensen, lament their desires and pine over what to do shortly after Anne arrives at Green Gables. Barth is most notable as he sings of his father love for Anne and never quite knowing what to say at the nght time in 'The Words". Also excellent in their roles is Cynthia Johnson as Miss Stacy, the new school teacher v. ho opens the world of understanding to the Avonlea stu: dents, Jennifer White, a Skyline High School Sophomore, as Diana Barry, the best friend of Anne who is enjoyable to watch as she loses all inhibitions from accidentally drinking too much currant w ine; and Clara Morey as the meddling neighbor Rachel Lynde, who is not afraid to speak her mind, even if it causes hurt feelings. The musical also includes three Cyprus High School Students, Stephen Bradford, Kim Delis, in the role of the snooty Josie Pye, and Garrett Peterson as the trouble-makin- g Moody MacPherson. Anne of Green Gables is presented Mondays through By DEBBI OLSON Editor Imaginative and fckty, the tale of Anne Shirley is brought to life in a new musical version filled with humor, sentiment and entertainment at the Grand Theater. Anne of Green Gables, the musical, is nicely adapted from the popular L.M. Montgomery series and often mirrors the popular PBS movie version, only with music. The songs in the musical, that sees the rise of Anne (with an "e") from "depths of despair" going from one family to another and orphanage to orphanage to finally ending up at Green Gables, albeit by mistake, are fun and enchanting and compliment the both Anne's story and her imagination. None better than Ice Cream as Anne is about to taste ice cream for the first time, and, being that the story is set around the turn of the century, it e cream is a most uncommon treat of the time. Anne, played by Emily Stewart, a senior from East College, is enjoyable in her performance of the child. Stewart has an excellent singing voice that is powerful in every performance. The highlight of the show is Matthew Cuthbert, played by c Neal Barth, who brings the shy farmer to life and gives new understanding to the personality of Matthew. Barth is perfectly cast in the role of Matthew, making his character easy to love and brings tears to the eyes in his final scene. ensemble The cast of townspeople and students at Avonlea School are enjoyable to watch through each scene and every song is made entertaining by the many dance Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. Grand Theater, Salt Lake Community College South City Campus, 1575 S. Due to legislation passed in this last session, some changes in the Granite's policy relating to its dress code must be changed. This is the third year that there have been some modifications to the law. The previous required a window that allowed students to opt out has been removed. The statue now allows principals to exempt students because of extenuating circumstances after meeting with parents or guardians. These circumstances need to be related to prohibitive medical or physical conditions and to extreme change in the financial situation where the school is unable to assist in the procurement of the standardized dress. Very few other reasons are acceptable. the school board's April 2, we will hear the second and final reading of the new policy. We need to make sure that the Granite District conforms to the law. It seems that this topic generally generates concerns and questions. Please contact your local school to see how the new revision will impact Spring At you. I attended an early childhood teacher offered by Professor Susan Kenney at BYU this Saturday. of two and three Parents worked side by side with BYU students as Dr. Kenney showed the importance of music in strengthening a young child's development. Two year olds became conductors while students were singing 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." As the baton moved faster, the singing did also. When the tiny conductors chose to move the baton slower so went the choir's voices. It was very interesting to watch as the little ones soon realized how they could manipulate the speed of the song by the movement of the hand. Each child got their turn at being conductors. They also were able to play the drums. Using a ball that increased in size, the students played louder as the ball expanded and softer as the ball's dimension diminished. Each child was given the opportunity of taking home a horn of some type to practice for the week. I wished I could be in that needed from 5 to judge the youth in their presentations.
