Show The Magna Times, West Valley News, Kearns Chronicle, Thursday, May 17, 2001 3 Community WVC teen to compete Salt Lake County provides healthy meals to the elderly By JOHN WARNKE Elizabeth Bare, of West Valley City has been selected as a finalist in the 2001 Utah National Teen-AgeScholarship Program. Bare will compete Friday and Saturday in the Ragan Theater at Utah Valley State College for one of 34 scholarships to a variety of colleges and universities throughout the country. Bare, a student at Valley Junior High, participated in the program last year where she won fourth runner-up and placed second in the Junior Division talent competition. At Valley Junior High, Bare was g a member of the ninth-grad- e team, performed in seven school plays and eight talent shows. She has earned several Golden Student awards and is a High Honor Roll student. To accomplish this, he hoped to create federal programs that would improve the quality of life for all Americans. The Older Americans Act of ' 1965 created a national network of federal, state and local agencies to plan and provide services and opportunities for the nations aged. These services, aimed to help the elderly retain their health and stay independent in their homes and communities, led to the creation of the Salt Lake Countys . ' Services 15 senior centers under contract with Valley Services, the nations senior nutrition provider. Valley has improved quality and service in the Countys nutrition program. David Turner, Program Director for the Countys Senior Centers, announced in February an increase in the suggested donation for congregate meals. For individuals 60 and older, the donation is $2.00, under 60, $4.00. Donations go directly into the food program. The actual cost of the meal is approximately $3.80 and the government dollar subsidizes so that the program can be available to all. These congregate meals provide at each of the centers a hot, nutritionally balanced meal that meets .all people, as well as one that .respects and takes care of its Aging in national program one-thir- Nutrition , Program. The act developed guidelines , not only for the Countys meals on wheels program, but also 'provides the guidelines for the cleer-leadin- daily nutritional allowance. Throughout the senior center system, the first Monday of every month is Birthday Monday, Spainhower, school principal. This is part of the schools Community of Caring program. The schools Community of Caring program is the plate on which so many other educational ideals rest, said Chris Campbell Kearns center director.
