Show 4 The Magna TimeaWest Valley News, Thursday, August 31, 2000 Opinion Copper Days moving forward MiastBanai-BUB- ; IXar I Editor, am writing with regard to the article in your August 17 issue of the West Valley News concerning the highway. I realize the highway must be built and that there has been controversy .too long over where it hould go. My neighbors say the city fathers have talked widening 5600 West as an immediate thing for the past 25 years and it still hasn't happened yet, so it probably will not in another 25, so they're not going to worry about it. The story of the little boy crying wolf comes to mind. My concern becomes the location of the highway, then, rather than if or when. The second choice listed in the article mentions the impact on I Ix-gac-y Kearns neighborhoods. The power line running approximately north and south along 5800 West, there also is a major gas line in the same corridor. The children living in my subdivision would have to cross that highway to reach their school, a big new one just being finished. Easily half of a large, busy community park presently accommodated safely over the pipeline and power corridor would be lost to the highway. It would require the demolition of 50 homes most of which are over 25 years old, all of them well cared for. This area lies between 3500 South and 4100 South. Just south of 4100 South. Hunter High School prop- erty goes all the way to that power corridor and consequently would lose a large portion of its school parking. This route for my area would cut my community in half. If it would also cut a west Kearns community in half, this approach requires more deep thought. The fourth route mentioned in your article routes the highway further west from 2100 South through a relatively undeveloped area. Nowhere ca the highway be routed that will not have a major effect upon someone. The choice should be to disrupt as little as possible. A major highway docs not need to be ruler straight. It probably is sager not. A good highway along the vest edge of the valley might divert enough heavy trucks going the length of Kip Peterson at . 250-047- Copper Days 2000 a success. First, Norm Fitzgerald for his work on planning and preparing luxury. Our city governments contemplation of which I was unaware until I read your article. This is my tax money. Just other cities because have amphitheaters doesnt mean West Valley city has to have one also. The Roman civilization in the time of the Caesars fell because the rulers entertained the people with sports events in such places while they quietly stole all their rights and resources away from them. Are we sure it isnt happening again right now? If the route along the west side of the valley is the least expensive and has the recommendation of the engineers who have studied it, we should look no further. To spend as much money to put in third choice highways it would cost of the highway is downright irresponsible. Even if we have adequate money, there are so many other places where it should go than for another extravagant entertainment center. In the last 3 years my property been revalued upward $20,000 and my property tax has increases $200 a year. As a county, we cannot afford this and Magna Copper Days is continuing the tradition into the new millennium. To keep Copper Days on going.
