Prior to the annual Copper Days festival, a new park was created at the corner of 2700 South and 9150 West. The finances for the park came from the county, which had set aside funds last year for the park, said Kip Peterson, Copper Days chairman. The county After the television show Touched By An Angel used the vacant lot just east of Colosimos Market in early August to depict a store destroyed by a tornado, it returned to the scene to transform the park into a new horseshoe park, complete with three horseshoe pits, new sod, lighting and a sprinkler system. Caroline Production, which films the popular CBS drama, spent more than $8,000 to create Days committee so that the the park. Kennecott opts out of Magna incorporation plans The company says is content to remain in an unincorporated area 97-year-- old it By DEBBI OLSON Editor Attorneys for Kennecott Copper have made a request of the Salt Lake County Clerk to have the companys property excluded from the proposed incorporation of Magna. Magnas Area and Community councils have joined forces to petition the county to conduct a feasibility study to determine if the city has a viable tax base to begin the incorporation process. Our position on incorporation is unchanged said Louie Canonelos, director of government and public affairs for Kennecott. Kennecott is satisfied with the current arrangement of keeping its property in an unincorporated area. According to state law, a property owner has the, right to file a Notice of Exclusion if their property is exceeds the assessed value of one percent of the total property value in the proposed incorporation area. One of the major reasons we want to be excluded is because of the vast amount of property we have, Cononelos said. We have land holdings from Butterfield Canyon to the Great Salt Lake. We would literally fall within six or seven cities. It makes no sense at all for the company to have to deal with so many municipalities. Despite not wanting to be included in the incorporation attempt, Canonelos said Kennecott is supportive 5f the efforts of the Magna residents to incorporate. If the residents of Magna want to incorporate, under the law, they have every right to do so, Canonelos said. We just dont want our operational plants in the areas of incorporation. According to Laura Jo McDermaid, president of the Magna Community Council, trying to exclude the Kennecott property from the incorporation boundaries was difficult to do because the exact addresses of the Kennecott land holdings could not be determined when the engineering study was done. The proposed incorporation boundaries will include the west side of the valley from the West Valley CityMagna boarder to the Tooele County line. It will include a portion of the Great Salt Lake and extend north to the Davis County Line. Cononelos said that since Kennecott provides all of its municipal services, including water and power, it does not need to be part of Magnas service area. With the rare exception, cities have higher taxes than unincorporated areas, Cononelos said. Cities can impose a municipal franchise tax for utilities. That tax does not go toward the betterment of the community and it makes no sense at all for us to be a part of that. Kennecott has been a part of the Magna communi Cyprus unbeatable in preseason ty since 1903. The Area and Community Council are planning to hold a public hearing in September to inform residents of the incorporation plan and what it would mean to the city. The councils are planning to circulate a petition to secure the signatures of 10 percent of Magna landowners in order to request Salt Lake County to do a feasibility study that will determine if there is sufficient tax base for incorporation. Kennecott will have 10 days to file a Notice of Exclusion once the feasibility study is requested by property owners through the petition process. It is anticipated that it will take 60 days to petition for the feasibility study and another year to go through the incorporation process, McDermaid said. Magna residents heads state VFW By DEBB!
