Utah didn't resist much. Utah had the right amount of starch in their uniforms, they just didnt play. Why? Who knows? Was it pressure? Probably more like apathy. When college basketball players graduate in America, most of them have six years of College, no degree and are unemployed. Most of their parents think they are N B.A. cinches. Thats pressure. Most college coaches, who have w inning programs, have become so big they cant be leaned on. Athletic Directors walk in fear of the successful coach. If you are ala Bobby Knight or Rick Majerus, the pressure is felt by the Athletic Directors and not the coach. The tail wags the dog; a little. Some coaches have large bodies and even larger egos. They pressure all who cross their Domains. They greet you with either a sneer or a scowl; depending on the day; on whether they can use you or not. Fraud and chicanery can wait, but not for long. if you happen to get past the receptionist and in the great mans office, you may wait a long time for an audience with the great one. Successful basketball coaches know how to put on the old pressure. While waiting for Aphrodite (the goddess of love) you will be able to memorize the coaches ego wall, where he displays his pictures, plaques, and banners. Some coaches will frame anything, do you feel the pressure. Coaches get fired over missed s and errant free throws and thats pressure. Winning Answers all things. Winning is the panacea lay-up- that keeps pressure away-fo- r awhile, coaches dont have to dress well or look good. They just have to win. Winning fills the house and rolls in the bucks; pressure. Rejection comes easy to the big time college coaches. A year ago while recruiting they told Johnny he was a cinch; now they know hes a bust. What to do they run him off; how? Pressure. He doesnt play. They chew him out everyday in practice. He leaves...Pressure. You make enemies in basketball (and some friends). The competition is vicious. There is some pressure. Important coaches take themselves to seriously. Pressure does that to them. Recruiting really causes pressure. There is a battle over every prep Player who can make a basket, or jump high. This weekend, April 8, she will be a member of the Utah Juniors (womens team) competing in the qualifying round of the U.S. Nationals. Its her fourth year competing on the national level, and her Utah Juniors team placed second two years ago. Shara hasnt let volleyball get in the way of her academics or other sports. She also plays forward on the Granger High girls basketball y and team and runs the throws the javelin, discus and shot for the schools female track team. She won Region II all-sthonors this year in the Governors Golden Sneaker Award at the end of the year. The program helps build self esteem and most of the students not only see their health improve but also their grades. DEAN LEDBETTER STAFF WRITER In the 2000 Utah Sate Amateur Athletic Union Age 13 Basketball Tournament March 18-2- 2 the Rangers turned in a respectable performance. Despite playing together only three weeks, the Rangers won one game and lost two among the best tarns in the Huntcr-Magn- a state. Tourney Tools Rangers with highest per game scoring averages in the state AAU tourney this year were: Otis 2, Jeff Wadsworth 10, Kip 10, Tyler Jones 9, Forrest Ledbetter 8, and Clark Johnson 8. Nelson Nowers 1 High rcbounder Forrest Ledbetter averaged 15 rebounds per game for the tournament. Utes 74, Rangers 41 On March 22 at Alta High School, the Rangers were eliminated from the tourney with a 74-4- 1 loss to the Utes, an all star team from Salt Lake and Utah counties together six months per year. The Rangers were ice cold from the field during the first 5:45 of the game and were down 0 However, Hunter-Magn- a actually outscored the Utes 2 during a rally to cut the deficit to 11-- 6 by the end of the first quarter.
