Show STATEWIDE March 18, 1982 Page InleDmolles safeHti gjas The Hercules Aerospace Division Bacchus Works will inaugurate satellite communications in March. The Bacchus satellite linkup will be one three Hercules locations to begin transmitting voice and date com- of munications this spring. Eventually, the Hercules network will consist of 15 earth stations across the country. Office Services Superintendent Gordon Young explained that long distance phone calls will make heavy use of the new communications. Key feature of the installation is 25Vfe foot antenna dish located at the Hercules Administration Building south of Magna. He said the switching equipment located in the building adjacent to the antenna dish will instantly analyze each call to select the least cost routing. If its determined cheaper, a call would be placed over convent ional land lines. Satellite calls between here and the east would be picked up by earth stations at the Hercules Reserch Center near the Wilmington, Del., home office or Oxford, near Atlanta, Ga., and relayed on land lines to their destination. Some utilization will be made for the freeze-fram- e teleconferencing at Magna and Clearfield. Special access numbers will be available in certain cases, Mr. Young explained. Hercules is the first chemical company to join the Satellite Business Systems communication network. This space-ag- e arrangement will not only lower costs but improve communications. Smaller company locations can be linked to the closest earth station to provide satellite network services to all Hercules plant sand offices. SBS is a partnership formed in 1975 by Aetna Life and Casualty Co., COMSAT General Corporation and IBM. It launched its first satellite into geostationary obit 22 ,300 miles above the equator a year ago. Voice and data communications are sent, to the satellite in digital pattern and returned to their original form at the receiving station. Voice communications will be transmitted at a significant savings. High-dat- a rate available with the satellite will help Hercules link computers together to provide faster transmissions and higher-spee- d at various interconnections locations. Electronic mail also will travel via satellite to enable exchange of documents at a faster rate and lower cost. Hercules facilities engineers Lynn Lewis and Bill Nultall survey 254 foot, antenna dish installed for satellite communications starting in March. Reading a letter aloud to a group, broadcasting it on the air, showing it on a television screen, or posting it in a public place may constitute publication in a legal sense. 1(107 ocnio (1070?
