Huish said he is very proud of the Magna post officer drivers good safety records. This post office has been on the honor roll of the Salt Lake Sectional Center post officers for two years without a disabling injury and two years without a motor vehicle accident Huish noted. To help postal letter carriers continue this accident free record and to protect our future customers, Huish asks parents to cooperate by keeping their children from gathering around the postal trucks when the drivers deliver the mail. This can be a safety hazard for both the drivers and the children. V. 1 -- v J. Chad Fenwick Melvin A. Smith Robert A. Phil pot Jr. perfectly frank Richard E. Barron Support of the Cheerleaders Editor, MAGNA TIMES: .1 am writing this letter to let you know how some of the adults and students from the community feel about the support the school cheerleaders give the High School Swim Team. I know .1 know that the cheerleaders attend all thefootballand basketball games, and are always decorating the halls, lockers, and homes of the football and basketball players. But do we ever see any of this for the swimmers? We are lucky to see them at a State Tournament let alone hear a cheer from them. If they do come, they rind a corner to sit in so they can talk to A Also I'm wondering how much support the wrestling, track, and cross country teams get? We feel all teams should be supported by the cheerleaders unstead of just a select few. PARENT OF A SWIMMER WGOSfteffifflll Have you ever noticed how much we waste in our society? Waste of energy is good example. I went to a bank the other day that had electric sliding doors. Why on earth would a bank have an electric sliding door? I can see why a grocery store would have one - its a lot more difficult to open a door when one has a bag of groceries in each arm. Usually the only thing Im carrying is my checkbook when I walk out of a bank. Electric doors (at banks, at least ) not only use up a lot of energy, but take a lot of energy to produce. Heres another example of waste. I went n drive-i- n for lunch. I orto a dered fries, a coke, and a burger. The coke came in a paper cup with a lid on it. The burger and fries were wrapped in paper. All these items were then stuffed into a paper bag along with little packages of catsup, napkins, and a straw. When I finished eating, there was a mound of garbage sitting in front of me. Our society must have some sort of fetish about sanitation. well-know- each other, tile their nails, or fix makeup. .Who has taken state more in the last ten years than the swimmers? We realize that cheerleaders have a lot . to do but swimmers put in at least five hours a day at the pool too, so with seven varsity, five junior, five sophomore cheerleaders, some of them could support their school mates. :8S0ffV Overconsumption is . an example of waste. American business is always creating something that we dont really need. Just take a glance at all the in your kitchen. A typical middle-clas- s person has two toasters, an automatic dishwasher, a microwave oven, an electric range, electric can opener, trash masher, and a garbage disposal. Business has created a demand for unneccessary items. How much of that stuff in your kitchen do you need? We tend to buy the things we want, instead of the things we need. The classic example is around Christmas where youre supposed to buy something for the person who has You end up buying everything. for that something person which they already have, or you buy something which you think they might want. The next time youre thinking about buying someone another toaster, buy them a pair of socks instead. Letter to the editor Handgun violence Editor, Magna Times : One year ago this month, the President of the United States was nearly killed with a Saturday Night Special. Thank God President Reagan survived. But during this past year over 20,000 other A mericans were shot with handguns. They were not as fortunate as the President. They died. Its easy to blame the politicians in Congress who should be doing something to stop Americas handgun violence. But the Congress works for us What have we done? What have youdone? The gun lobby sts are puny compared to us. Polls show that nine in ten Americans want tougher handgun laws. But the politicians hear from the gun zealots every day. Its time they heard from us. Superstition has it that if your ears ring, tingle, burn c someone is talking L about you. he MAGNA 91 TIMES 24 W. 2700 So.. And if becoming one million strong isnt enough, well find ten million more until our handgun laws are And if Congress wont strengthened. change the law, well change the Congress. Every time a John Lennon or a Ronald Reagan is shot, America is called a side sodety. A handful of kooks doesnt make us a sick sodety. But what is side is for the rest of us to let this handgun violence continue. You can do something to stop Americas handgun violence. Contact us. Well show you how.
