February 18. 1982 SPORTS je Pirate Swim Club hosts mini-me- et The Pirate Swim Club hosted the fourth annual mini-meon February 6, Brigham Rode and City Springs for the and under swimmers. There were one hundred and six partidpants in the meet this year. Swimmers traveled from as far away as Brigham City and Rode Springs to attend the traditional cookie meet. Swimmers were able to partidpate in as many as five events. Ribbons were awarded first through sixth in each event. et Boys and girls from each age group who received the most total individual points were awarded a ceramic swimmer trophy. A giant pirate cookie was given to the second place winners in each age group. Every partidpant in the meet received a big cookie for their efforts. It has been said you can prove anything with statistics. Im inclined to agree and I often wonder if this isnt especially true in athletics. The world of sports has gone statistics crazy. Coaches have begun to shart the moves of all their players and have turned those charts into copious amounts of statistical gibberish. Football coaches have translated their first downs, total yardage gained, number r of passes completed, and punting average into so much gugum pucki that no one remembers the final score of the game. Basketball coaches describing their losses, dwell so much on rebounds, assists, field goal percentage, and turn overs that the listener can hardly pick out the winner. Regardless of how many piles of statistics the coach and the reporter can project upon the unsuspecting fans, there is really only one state that really counts and thats wins and losses. y i I I A 5 Every coach is known by his record and no amount of percentages and averages will ever take the place of the number of points scored by each team. Statistics to coaches have become like repentance to the sinner, they hide a multitude of sins. I once took a statistics class in graduate school and found it worse than trying to balance a check book. It was the type of class that owned you. You could work all day on a problem, fill notebooks with figures, come up with ten digit answers, and still not know what you had. Statistics, that great science which is based on the collection, organization, analysis, and interpretation of numerical data, has overstepped its bounds by coming into the practical world of athletics. Dont you really think statistics ought to pack up and go bade to the research laboratory where it came from? After the basketball coach gets the mean, mode, median, and standard deviation on his team by statistical analysis, what has he really got? Can he change a loss over to the win column? If the coach subjects a poor season or a particular defeat to the probability theory, he will probably still come up with a loss anyway. Instead of correlating all that date, the coach ought to get his team correlated so they can play together enough to win some games, and get the statistics to add up to some victories. Brenda been with the team for only one week. Tiffany Hayes and Colby Bryant from and under age group, and the Nikki Archibald from the 7 year-old group sue of their in the particular top placed event. Tiffany, Colby, and Nikki are all Pirate Swimmers. Other Magna Pirate swimmers in the meet were Darla Kelson, Branda Shirers, and Dustin Dilley. The effectiveness of the age group swimming program here in Magna is always seen each year during high school state championships. If you have a youngster who is interested in swimming the high school program at Cyrus in the future, now is the time to get him into the competitive swimming program. You can become part of the Magna Pirate Age Group Team by trying out at the Magna from 4 tn 5 p rp. Pool week-dav- Johnston from Springville, Utah. Diana Johanson and Chris Hadley, both from the Roy team, were high point winners. In the eight year old division, Julie Olsen from Murray received high point while Brandon Newman from Kearns took high point honors for the boys. Tiffany Hayes from the Pirate team and Cory Sindair from Granger both received second place cookies. Tiffany and Corey represented the Seven year olds Shawna Lorenzo from the Eagle team and Brian Clingar from Tsunami were second place winners. Brooke D Evelyn of the Eagles and Mike McNalley from Rock Springs accumulated the second most total points in the division. Christie Handcock from Murray was the youngest competitor.
