Deputy s:Tiffs say most of the 400 such persons trapped each year in the United States panic after unsuccessful attempts to open doors. Instead," according to the sheriffs, the right thing to do is an unnatural thing." IT Ti:z CAH LANDS upright, calmly let the inside fill with water. When the pressure inside equals the pressure outside, the door will open easily. A pocket of air remains inside ithe auto as it fills with water. This is enough air to last the 10 or 15 minutes it takes the machine to fill with water. The trapped person has only to keep his head in the air pocket When the water stops rising, the pressure inside is about equal to the outside pressure. The trapped person then takes a deep breath, opens the door, pushes out and up to the surface. THE AIR POCKET will remain even after the door is open, so there is no need to hurry. Just take your time and dont panic, the sheriffs say. If the machine submerges with the' windows, open, in an upright position, the same air pocket will form as water rushes through the open window. The trapped victim should brace himself 'against the force 'of inhis head coming water,-keepinagainst the roof of the water. The car will fill faster, but when it is full the door will open the same way and the victim can push out and to the surface, t s h W South, of Magna suffered various injuries Tuesday when the car she was driving collided with one driven by Wendell Marcy, 3347 South 8325 West.
