Show Magn&, Utah, Friday, March 13, 1933 Yacht Harbor Progresses By Garfield Smelter 180 Men Employed On Recreational Site and Project one of the worlds outstanding scenic wonders, is expected to attract thousands of tourists annually with the completion of the recreational now being pier and yacht harbor constructed. fn teen miles due west of Salt Lake City, and near Garfield as a WPA project, -- "With the proper facilities available for anchorage, hundreds of new boats will be constructed during the next few years, giving the residents of Utah and the tourists an opportunity to visit the many attractions to be found on the numerous tsYndu and the vast shore line of this great inland sea," G. P, Back-ma- n said. Besides this, the WPA project, will make it possible to hold regional and national speed boat races on the lake, which will undoubtedly bring in many visitors to the state and attract such noted racers as Gar Wood and o there. Dus to the density of the salt water, the boats are lifted out of the water, making it possible for the speed boats to travel much faster than in other bodies of water." Work on the project, which will cost $48,929, is being rushed as rapidly as possible and is expected- to be completed so that It can be used at the beginning of the boating season this spring, Kenneth Borg, WPA district director reports. The work is sponsored by Salt Lake county, which is contributing $5,198, while the WPA is supplying the remaining $43,740. Most of the money is being expended for labor and is giving employment to 180 heads of families for a period of four months, Mr. Borg exAt present two shifts of plained. 90 men each are working on the project which is nearly half com- Great Salt Lake, pleted. large part of the men are Working at the quarry near the Garfield smelter, taking out- - thousands of tons of rock being used to construct the rock fill which extends 2400 feet into the lake, while the remainder are employed at the harbor. Located on U. S. highway No. 40, between the famous Saltair resort and Black Rock beach, the harbor is within easy reach of the residents of Magna and Garfield and the surrounding territory. . A small stream A of fresh water running into the harbor from the Oarfleld Shelter will make it an ideal place for the anchoring of many boats which will be used on the lake. - ' The Great Salt Lake Yacht club Is now undertaking the construction of a club house and other facilities at the site of the boat harbor which la being constructed by WPA And Salt Lake county. John E. Jones, vice commodore of the organization announced. The construction of the club facilities Is a project whiahths yacht club has contemplated for several years, but has been held in abeyance awaiting favorable and such a tjma that the development of recreational boating cm the lake on a considerable scale would be assured, he Now, with the construction of the harbor well underway, all previous difficulties which have centered around the lack of suitable Mr. anchorage will be obviated, Jones said. There will be calm waters In which boats may be safely moored; there will be piers to which boats may be tied; one may drive directly to his mooring; a watchman all the year round will protect the boats and equipment and a steward will give desired personal attention to boats during the boating season. "Fresh water will be available to wash boats and a motor operated, hoist will be installed to lift the boats in and out of the water, while the harbor will be equipped with electric beacons and a radio station for the protection of the boaters. The club members and residents of Utah generally are greatly appreciative of the excellent work which is being accomplished by the government and the county. The project should greatly stimulate Interest In boating and Increase the number of boats by 200 during the next few years." The boat harbor consists of a half mile of roadway leading from the highway into the lake. At the outer end, of the roadway a quarter UkUe of breakwater paralleling the shore is being constructed, making a sheltered harbor on the landward side. The breakwater and connecting roadway are a rock fill heavily revetted to withstand wave action and with a top sufficiently high to give adequate freeboard at the highest expected future level of the lake. The present construction is definitely of a permanent nature and will furnish sheltered mooring for about 200 boats. Great Salt Lake4s admirably suited as a place' for boating, according to Dr. Thomas C. Adams, commodore of the yacht club. Its waters are warm and invigorating and there are more than 1500 square miles of navigable waters even at the present low water stage. Its shores are safe anchorage and are reasonably approached. The lake possesses notable scenic features 'i which are world renowned and the water and life of the lake are objects of great interest because of their peculiar nature.
