Show even wavs to Get 13 ill came to the city from a small town. He had gone to college to prepare himself to teach and he was determined to make good. To do this, he knew it would be necessary not only to teach competently but also to get along with people in the new community. Though he began as a social science teacher, Bill was soon made principal of a small school. Today he is principal of the largest school in town. He is active in the state councils of education, writes for the professional journals, and is a leader in his field. What is the difference between Bill and some teachers who are pushed from school to school because no principal wants to keep them? The answer is: Bill learned how to get along with people. What is the difference between two attorneys, two chemists, two executives in the same department in the same office? One moves ahead, makes friends, goes places, and rings the bell of success. The other barely makes the grade. The answer is: knowing how to get along with people. How do you do it? A group of successful people, including the president of a large industrial concern and the president of one of the largest seminaries in the country, tell me there are seven guideposts to getting along with people: 1. Be sincere in every word you say and every service you render. Bill learned that people cooperate best when they have faith in your essential honesty. They may not always like your opinions, but they continue to believe in you. Thats why Bill was given the largest school in the city to manage. 2. Learn to think cooperatively. To be sure, you often have to think things through on your own, but there is another, more fruitful way of thinking sharing experiences with others to produce new ideas which nobody had thought of before. Jim starts the discussion by telling his experience and point of view. Bob reacts negatively and states his case. Judy comes through with a new slant. John adds more information to the discussion and each begins to think in new terms. Out of the play of mind upon mind, a sound, acceptable point of view emerges. Watch a clinic of physicians, a board of directors, a democratic family council, the board of a PTA with a real problem to tackle. It is easier to get along with people by thinking with them than by imposing your ideas upon them and it yields more productive ideas. . on- rd : . "1 1 7- -1 and Deodorized Too!
