twentythree TWENTY THREE MEN KILLED IN WEST VIRGINIA MINE lose would have been much greater but for the fact that a small force was working on the sunday shift As a result of an explosion in shaft affo 1 of the united states coal coke company at wilcoe W va on sun day twenty three miners are supposed to have lost their lives and it is bible that the number will exceed this fifteen bodies had been recovered at last reports although a large res cue party Is at work in the mines it Is barely possible but not likely that some of the remaining entombed miners will be rescued alive the exi was of terrific force and shat windows a mile distant imme after the shock a great num her of miners who were off duty ruthei to the shaft to find great cloud of smoke and dust gushing from its mouth mothers children and other relatives were soon weeping and pleading for the rescue of those dear ito them entombed in the mine the officials of the mine were soon on the acene the dead miners thus far re covered are all italians and hungar tans the company usually work in this shaft about seventy five miners but it being sunday the men were not all in and the small loss of life can be attributed only to this tact the united coal coke company with prin cipal offices in pittsburg pa Is of the united states steel corpora alon the cause of the explosion haa not as yet been determined
