Possession has the distinction of being a different picture. It is different because it reveals an entirely new atmosphere. It is delightful entertainment because it is built upon a plot of adventure and clean romance with natural backgrounds provided by some of the most gorgeousin southern ly beautiful scenery France, where the picture was made by the noted French producer. Not a single scene of Possession takes place in a studio. Every bit of action was photographed amid the natural scenery of places near Cannes, a famous resort on the southern coast of France and on the historic island of St. Margarets which lies far out to sea. (As a result the natural element of realism and beauty to Possession which few Other film productions could boast. The story is a typical Hope tale of adventure. A British nobleman. Lord Wheatley, buys the island of Neopalia, in the Egean sea, and embarks for his new domain with a group of friends and a stout old valet. From the moment they arrive at the beautiful little principality in the sea, troubles pile upon them. The natives rise in rebellion, inspired by hatred stirred by one who plans to control the islandhimself by marrying Phroso, otherwise Lady Euphrosyne, the uncrowned princess of Neopalia. Forces of native troops besiege the castle in which Lord Wheatley and his friends take, refuge and they have a merry time ducking bullets and other missiles hurled into the ancient structure. Seldom has suspense been so well maintained as in Climaxes follow cliPossession. maxes with a dramatic wallop rarely achieved in the development of plots upon the screen. Until the last few moments of the story the element of suspense is kept at a high pitch. Then, at the end, comescan-a big twist that every spectator not help but like. Mr. Mercanton in all of his productions assembles a cast of the very highest caliber. Of special note in this instance is the presence in the cast of Miss Malvina Longfellow, prominent on the American stage several ye$.rs ago when she appeared in support of Otis Skinner in Kismet and other plays. -- Ste-fanopoul- os, RIDING WITH DEATH The Rough Diamond, title of the latest Fox production, starring Tom Mix,? which is due at the Columbia theater tonight and; Saturday, will be full of surprise for the local adT mirers of this vigorous star :and that means practically every photoplaygoer in town. Without revealing in detail the elements of new and surprising action and atmosphere that The Rough Diamond contains, it may be said that Mix practically steps out of his old character entirely and reveals a new power and versatility as an actor becomes a reckless and romantic adventurer amid tense scenes and dynamic action in a South American republic. With a colorful and romantic story of this type, and divorced from the usual scenes and western action that he has made famous, Mix has a greater opportunity than ever to show his capabilities as an actor and he does it in a manner that establishes him more strongly in fame and favor than ever before. With bold, broad strokes, as well as the very finest shading of character delineation, Iix plays upon every emotion, mixing delightfully light moments of comedy with heavy, tense and thrilling' dramatic action: Supporting him is 'the usual sterling cast of players, including ' Eva Novak, as female lead. The player in question was notorious for tardiness, but generally furnished such plausible excuses that, as a rule, he. was punished with a slight reprimand. On the morning in question, as Director Mitchell, nearly frantic, paced up and down, looking at his watch every few minutes, while the studio force tried to reach the delinquent by telephone, the offending player strolled leisurely into the studio. Well, what excuse this time? thundered Mitchell, facing him. It is slaving in its worst form, they write, open, cruel, fiendish runfetted by European interference and scarcely discountenanced by European foreign offices. The slave gangs are smaller than formerly, because the border districts are becoming depopulated, but they can be witnessed by any traveler. In southern Abyssinia there are to be seen men chained together and women and children dragging themselves painfully alongside them, many of them dying from exhaustion by the roadside.
