When the Chamber of Commerce has become fully organized' with its full quota of membership signed up, then is when its real work begins. ' Each member should bear his share of the the permanence ot the work the comat the conclusion of the first three weeks' educational movement. One of theee men, for 'years a stannch supporter of such bodlee as have existed In Provo, today told a representative of The Post why he has faith tn the lasting qualities ot the present movement. The modern plan of organisation which has been adopted, he said, is the best guarantee that the chamber will be permanent. The structure contains the elements of permanence. If they are rightly directed. Stating the matter in this way pats this up to the membership whole, squarely. The modern Chamber of Commerce differs from that of former times in that it does not consist mainly of a board ot directors and a contributing group of ettlnms. Per manency does not Ue- in the hoard of directors, tor the directors with out the cooperation of the members can do little or nothtaf. "Chief aids ta maintaining the la terest of the members are the genu lne democracy of the body, the members forum and the special committees. Men who Invest 920 a year for each membership they taka will want to feel they are getting their moneys worth of action. They wUl therefore be alert la watching for accomplishment. Xt la this form ot Interest which must be maintained from the start, for It wilt be hard to arouse It if It Is allowed to lag. The election of officers and directors and the building of the program ot work will be the first things undertaken. These will serve farther to stimulate Interest and arouse expectation. With the program ot work carefully defined, will come the appointment ot the special committees. As has been fully explained, these will be composed of men interested in the. projects committed to them, and It has also been told bow the members1 forum will serve as a means ot cheeking np the work ot. the -- committee end keeping the membership ts a whole Informed oa the progress' being made. Ia a city like Provo It is easy to coacelva that enough things will be found to do to employ the time and service ot a considerable number of the members of the chamber. It will be found that when a man has served on a committee which has. accomplished some specific thing for the good of the community, he will have a sense of pride la the accomplishment. His enthusiasm wUl spread to others and la a surprisingly short time service oa the eommlttees will he regarded both ap,a duty aad a ' ,1 I pleasure. , ", new projects are brought forf i'As more aad more of the cltlsens ward.will be called upon to give thought and.etfort. Thu management of the chamber, will, of course, adopt means of keeping the members as whole Informed oa the work ta hand, it will be equipped to give ready and reliable answers to Inquiries and requests.' It will have one or more special bureaus for the benefit of particular interests, and It .will be able to tell the members what other communities are doiag la a large 1 bi unity will enter upon i I Townsmen Ptoto men who actively backus the Chamber of Commerce movement are Naturally concerned about Chamber of Commerce Of We Join Our Fellow SAYS: LOCAL ITIES, PROVO re- sponsibility for the carrying on of the civic work. "Thus realisation on the part of the members that the Chamber of Commerce is doing definite things will maintain their interest, tor what man is not proud to belong to an organization which has an established reputation for accomplishment? . Along with this feeling of pride of membership will come the discovery that the Chamber of Commerce Is a mighty tine place' for the cultivation of a wider acquaintance, and good fellowship, which every normal human being seeks, In any consideration of the permanency of the Chamber of Commerce as an active force la the community, account should be taken ot the young mea who are brought Into the organisation through the: educational period. Theee are the leaders of tomorrow la the business aad profession si life et the community. They come into the chamber under certain to; arouse their Interest at the start. This Is sore te hold until they have found' themselves aad they begin to take aa active part. In the citys affairs. Thus there Is a constantly growing snpply of new enthusiasm. Perhaps the best test ot the permanency of a modern Chamber of Commerce is the experience where there are such bodlee old enongh to begin to disintegrate It they are ever going to. examination ot the record shows that without exception, these chambers are entering' their second, third, fourth and fifth years bigger, stronger, and backed by a more real live interest on the part of the communities. There Is ample evidence that the plan of organization of the 'modern Chamber of Commerce Is such as to Insure Its permanency, under . wise management.
