Though no doubt a fictitious story, it fits in many communities, and it may well be considered by the members of the Chamber of Commerce at the election of officers, September 24. In the typical town described in this story, a Commercial Club was first organized by a local booster, and it had a grand glorification for an initial meeting. Everyone was enthusiastic. Before the meeting was over the diners could almost see the sewer system, new high school, street paving, new railroad station, etc. But all this enthusiasm went up in smoke, and none of these things were 'accomplished. The original idea of Labor Day was that it would serve to impress the world with the dig-niof labor, the power of the laboring forces of the world, and attract interest to the effort g masses to improve their of the ' condition. The world is not right so long as so many people have to live in unwholesome surroundings with little prospect of advancement. If people are indolent and thriftless, if they are subject to vices, if they are burdened with too large families, they must always find life a struggle. But the majority of wage earners are not thus responsible for their difficulties. Their worst handicap is lack of education and training that shall enable them to do skilled work. The working masses can not better their condition by class warfare. What is needed is better facilities for technical training, so that every wage earner shall be a skilled producer capable of earning something more than a mere living wage. The best Labor day thought that the people f Provo can have is a feeling of keen inter-- . est in all the wage earners that tuni out to enjoy the day, and a wish to do their part to see that everyone shall get the training and equipment giving him a chance in the race of life. Provo has just reason to be proud of her young men, as well as those of more mature experience, for the splendid spirit that has been shown in the recent movement to give this city a real live commercial organization through which all might function for the betterment of the entire community. Never has this spirit of been so thoroughly exemplified in Provo, and those who are engaged in the work of spreading the spirit Of optimism which now permeates the atmosphere are entitled to the prosperity and happiness their good work is bound to bring. y We congratulate them upon their success. -- AUTOMOBILE TENDENCIES.
