Best friends Home for the Holidays By Sherry Woodard People all across the state are adopting a pet for the Holidays. Its all part of an adoption campaign called Home for the Holidays, and its designed to encourage people to adopt animals from shelters, instead of buying from a pet store or breeder. This year, the No More Homeless Pets in Utah campaign is aiming to find homes for 4,250 dogs and cats between Thanksgiving and Christmas. If that happens, it will mean that for the first time on record, more animals will have been adopted than killed in shelters statewide. Santa and his foster dog, Rudolph, were honored guests at the kick-of-f, which was held at Furburbia, the pet adoption center in Cottonwood Mall in Salt Lake City. Channel 4 and the Deseret News covered the Gina Barberi event, and dedicated a few hours of her birthday to broadcasting from Furburbia. (When she was asked on-awhat she wanted for her birthday, Gina replied, Everyone just adopt a dog!) Adopting a new pet is quite easy, although there are some important things to be checked and questions to be answered before everyone can sign the adoption papers. Heavens! one man said to me last week when he was filling out the papers and answering the questions. Its harder to adopt a dog than it is to adopt a child! Actually, thats not the case! When you adopt a child, every part of your life is scrutinized. There are background checks and financial checks, and your neighbors, friends, and family are all interviewed. The adopting agency wants to make sure that the child they are placing will be in a safe, secure home, , with all the support he or she is going to need. X-9-6s J -- When it comes to the animals, we just want to make sure that the new home is going to be right for them and right for you. Re- -. member, too, that many of them have already come from a home that didnt work out, so we want to make sure that this doesnt happen again. That means finding out a few important things about the new home. For example, we want to be sure that your dog or cat will be safe at home and wont go running off outside and get into trouble. Some pets get on well with children and other dogs and cats, while other pets dont. Sometimes, people think they want a big dog, but theyd probably be better off with a small one, or vice versa. There are dogs that are quite happy if theyre left alone for a few hours, and others that get upset if theyre alone for more than a few minutes. We want to be sure that you understand the commitment youre. making when you take this new family member into your home. Make no mistake about it, even if animals cant explain it in plain English, your dog or cat will suffer in a way thats comparable to a small child if he or she has bonded with you and is then, for whatever reason, suddenly given up. Most of the animals that come to Best Friends have been given up by someone (others were bom stray), and they all go through a noticeable grieving period while they try to adjust to the fact that their whole world has suddenly fallen apart. That said, the dogs and cats in shelters - here at Best Friends and around the state - all think you should take one of them into your home Over the Holidays. They have a lot of love to offer -and so do you.
