Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS Opinion 4 WEDNESDAY MAY 23, 2001 Dixie Speaks A deep and meaningful editorial My son Kyle is graduating from Kanab High on Friday. He and I have shared an inside joke for years. On every birthday, special occasion, or whenever he accomplished something, I wrote a letter congratulating and telling him what I liked about him. Whenever he would receive one in the mail he'd ask, "Mom, is this another one of your 'deep and meaningful' letters?" Kyle and his brothers have received many through the years. In an age where we hear so much about teen violence, substance abuse and general apathy, I'd like to report an entirely different story. The teens that I have been privileged to interact with here are not only fun and intelligent, but good people as well. They have handled academic expectations, peer pressure, athletic competition and life crisis with graceful aplomb. They have felt disappointment, tasted defeat and experienced the heartbreak of losing a friend. And they've weathered all of these trials with a measure of class seldom found in most adults. Thanks to the Kanab High School teachers, as well as all the district staff, for your hard work on preparing these students for graduation. Thanks to my son's classmates and their parents for being a good influence and treating him with such kindness. And most of all, thanks to everyone who gave him cheese. While the 2001 graduating class will face many future challenges, they have held up well in the past. I can say with confidence that our future is in good hands with these young people! Our little comer of the world should be proud of these young adults, and anticipate their futures with much excitement. P.S. To my favorite "Plant Time" author known as Kyle Brunner: this is the very last 'deep and meaningful' message that I'm going to write to you...at least while you are in high school! KMS Track Meet big success Dear Editor: The Kanab Middle School Track Meet was a big success. Six schools participated this year: Kanab, Valley, Fredonia, Piute, Panguitch and Enterprise. A big thanks to the staff at KMS, Karen Kelly, Ken Brown, Matt Brown, Harold Hamblin, Gary Johnson and the Kanab High School Track team. It would be impossible to have a meet without these people. The KMS PTA had wonderful con- -' cessions and hospitality table. Thanks a bunch PTA. KMS Track Coaches Thank you, Kanab! Dear Editor: I have just returned from my first (but surely not my last) visit to Kanab. The purpose of my trip was first and foremost to visit Best F riends, which proved to be a wonderful experience. I was very impressed with the sanctuarystaff and the obvious love they have for every critter there. I know 111 return and volunteer. I was lucky enough to be in Kanab when all the greyhounds came to visit! That was an absolutely delightful treat for me! I watched the Blur of Fur races, the parade, and loved every minnow single minute. When I made my reservations back in J anuary for my visit, I did not know about the greyhound gang so it was an added bonus to my vacation. They are such great dogs and all of their humans were so receptive to my wanting to pet, pet, pet every one. It was lots of fun for me. I felt very welcomed by everyone in Kanab. Shopkeepers, restaurant folks, and people on the Street all had a warm smile and a friendly word. So, thank you Kanab-Il- l see you all again one day. a house up in Alton years ago and a dog who liked to chase trucks literally dashed underneath my wheels. I hit her. I was mortified and terrified the dog was badly hurt. I spent the next hour in those folks house calling veterinarians trying to find one in on the weekend and offering to pay the bill! Thank heavr ens the dog wasnt at all seriously injured. Southern Utah News Deadlines AAA FRIDAY 1 PM See LETTERS, Page 5 itiiiiijM Sincerely yours, Naida Wilkins Hit and Run Driver Dear Editor: I just spoke to the City Attorney and asked if there is some kind of legal liability involved if a driver hits a dog on the road and just keeps on going. This is in reference to last weeks letter from Barbara Shine whose dog was hit in the road in front of her home and the driver didnt bother to stop. In fact, not only is there no legal liability, but Ms. Shine is actually at fault because there is a leash law in Kanab. She is required by law to keep her dog on her property or on a leash or she could be subject to a fine by animal control. Nevertheless, we all know that-i- ts extremely not nice to hit someones dog in the road and keep on going. Thats just not ethical behavior.
