I can well remem- they really must go, both of you where Love abounds, where one ber the hysterical response from are reluctant to part. Driving education They should have asked for my input. The United States Department of Education spends an extraordinary amount of time and money trying to figure out why American kids lag behind much of the world in education. It funds studies, sends specialists abroad to observe other educational systems; they do everything to figure out why our test scores are by other countries. Some point their fingers at the skills ofour educators, while others say its the erosion of the American family, yet still others say its because we arent spending enough money on it. I hate to be the one to break it to them, theyre barking up the wrong tree. American kids are every bit as smart as the rest of the world, perhaps even brighter. Its just that nur kids need a little .more .of; an.important thing- called motivation. The key to U.S. world domiover-shadow- ed - - nance in educational performance? Tie all test scores to their drivers license exam! Now theres motivation. Show me a kid who wants to get hisher license, and Ill show you a kid who can solve a trigonometry problem in nothing flat! Heck, American teens can break the genetic code if they think it might result in a experience. I discovered this important behind-the-whe- el concept only recently while watching our youngest son tak- ing drivers ed. ...until your car comes to a full and complete stop... Wow Cody, I rub my eyes glancing at the clock which now displays 12:30 a.m., thats amazing. That makes the 6,492nd word of this study test that you have recited verbatim. Its weird, even words that you copied down wrong were said as is. flenuai Which words did I have wrong? he questions in panic. Oh just one or two here and there, no big deal, I tell him. Shall we call it a night? Find the words that are wrong, weve got to do it again. Smart move Dixie I comment to myself, as I thumb back through a drivers ed tome which resembles the Bible in length. Driving is important to them, thus having the potential to motivate them to learn at all costs. If we could somehow tie that dogged determination for getting a license with say, learning a foreign language, wed have stuthe most language-fluedents in the world. We could require that they had to take and pass the drivers exam in Spanish and Latin before they would actually be rewarded with a license. The impact would be immediate, but with some drawbacks. How would we adults even know that we had been cursed in a fit of road rage by a teen speaking nt Japanese? Cody, I have never seen you spend as much time on any subject as you do on driver's ed, I commented. Why dont you study Algebra for the same amount oftime? Its possible that youd give Albert Einstein a run for his money on overall knowlege. Sorry mom, cant right now. Ive gotta go...by the way, can I have the car keys? l i Some of my happiest memomy husbands snooty aunt (definot Dust a are of moments shared over ries Bunny person) nitely when I told her I was giving food cups of tea or coffee with a Dust and water to a tiny occupant in Bunny friend, discussing a book the bathroom and asked her to you (or they) are working on, Old books line shelves (usu- please not harm it.
