Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 1 1, 2000 Opinion Letters Continued from Page 4 teachers, employers, etc... I appreciate the positive impacts youve made in my life. Thanks again! Matt Pepper Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Dear Editor: Kanab Elementary Students and Staff would like to give a Great Big Thank You to Honeys Jubilee for their contribution to the school to purchase Accelerated Reading Because of this generous donation, we are able to continue the reading incentive program we offer the students. Again, thank you so much Mr. Honey. We appreciate your support. We live in a wonderful community and have reached out many times to the businesses of Kanab. It seems like they are always willing to help. We thank you for all your support in the past. Kanab Elementary School Another view Dear Editor: I was interested in the verbose letter from Ken Glover of Boise, Idaho, which you published last week. Although Mr. Glover expresses concerns about not having access to the Grand Staircase Escalante Monument, it seems his concerns stem in reality, not from a desire to preserve the natural beauty, harmony and wildlife of the area, but rather to be free to violate the peace and tranquility, and traumatize the wildlife and erode the vegetation by careering around with his family on their respective ATVs. If he will cast his memory back, surely he can appreciate that in the days of his youth, he was able to enjoy the area either by hiking, bicycling or riding on horseback. What bird song, assuming all birds have not fled, can anyone enjoy over the racket of an ATV? No, Mr. Glover, I am all for preserving the Monument for the sake of those who truly value what it has to offer. I am thankful the Monument has been created for the benefit of everyone, including present and future generations. Might I suggest the Bonneville Salt Flats would be a far more appropriate venue for the ATV family excursions. Sincerely, Pamela J. Shealy Kanab, Utah Belted concerns Dear Editor: I understand now why others have requested space in your paper to express thanks to others for their service to the com munity. There is no other venue quite so apt to reach those who deserve the thanks that we wish to express! The night of October 1st, Adrienne was in an automobile accident in which it was determined that, in order to protect a possible neck andor back injury, she would need to be cut out of the car with the Jaws of Life machine. I was able to see the results of this decision, as I watched them remove Adrienne with such skillful care and finesse that I was truly in awe. We express our heartfelt thanks to the officers, EMTs and other medical personnel who show this dedication. Special his country and zealously defends its interests. Not one place in these definitions does it refer to government, only country! Government is defined as rule; control, administration of public affairs; system of policy in a state; territory ruled by a governor; executive power. Any person who has served in the military or in a position that requires an oath be taken in the service of our Country, all swear to uphold and defend the Constitution ofthe United States of America and to defend the constitution against all enemies both foreign and domestic. In the situations we face right now, the enemy comes from 5 cause they are compelled tr do so and have no control over that within. When the federal government, BLM, or even our own county commissioners are called the enemies, they come by it naturally. An enemy from within is to be feared more so than an enemy from without, because you will never expect an attack on our rights, liberties, and freedoms to come from someone who also enjoys those same rights, liberties, and freedoms. Therefore, when the term patriotic is used, remember not to use government in association with the term patriotism or any of its other than their right, obligation or responsibility to ote in the elections. When more citi zens turn out to vote than those who choose to be ignorant and lazy and not exercise their right, obligation or responsibility of voting, then it is up to us (those who vote ) to make those choices. Sometimes we win and sometimes we lose, yet we never lose the opportunity to complain or voice our opinion because w e are active participants in Govern- ment. variations. Daniel W. Hulet Kanab, Utah Most of American citizens do support their government be thanks to Dr. Burst and hospital personnel as well. Gratitude to God, of course, that the accident wasnt worse, and lastly to the officers who have been charged with the re- sponsibility of annoying us about our seat belts. Only because Adrienne had been warned of a possible seatbelt citation did she reluctantly strap herself in as she left our home that night. Because of the placement of the collision, the airbag did not deploy, leaving her at the mercy of that bothersome seatbelt. Thank you, Trooper Cluff. Sincerely, Gary and Jeanine Johnson Adrienne Swapp Roads Warrior-Pa- rt II Dear Editor: This is the second in a series of comments on your column Dixie Speaks, dated August 30, 2000. Many people have read the monument management plan and feel it is restrictive, if not too restrictive. It has been approved by the powers that be, even though those powers that be are not elected powers so they are not true representative powers. This management plan cannot be placed into action until these roads in question are owned or controlled by the BLM, that is a fact. How can Kane County lose much if they dont sign this roads agreement? Many feel that Kane County will lose much more ifthe commissioners sign this agreement or any agreement like it, hence the large opposition that was at that meeting on the 23rd of August. We as citizens, as long as we have rights or things that others want, will always have enemies, and we stand to lose more than those who would take them from us do. In your article you state, Most people in Southern Utah are patriotic. They fly the flag with pride and pledge allegiance at most meetings. When did the government they purport to support become the enemy? We need to shed some light on this! Patriotism is defined as the qualities of a patriot; love of ones country.
