Show 1 5 SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 27, 2000 Community - 24 Clinton probably could have avoided impeachment if he had heeded Sen. Orrin Hatch, says new book Veteran Washington journalist and author Lee Roderick says President Bill Clinton likely could have avoided impeachment if he had heeded Senator Orrin Hatchs advice to make a clean break from his past and be honest with the American people. Hatch's counsel to Clinton was offered publicly and privately in 1998, before the House of Representatives voted to impeach the President in December for actions stemming from his affair with Monica Lewinsky. Details conof the private Hatch-Clinto- n versations are revealed for the first time in Rodericks new book, Gentleman of the Senate: Orrin Hatch, a Profile of Character. Gentleman is the sequel to Rodericks critically acclaimed biography ( Leading the Charge: Orrin Hatch and 20 Years of America , Gold Leaf Press, 1994). It was released at a news conference in July at the Hilton Hotel, Salt Lake City, and will be in bookstores within days. The hardcover book has 375 pages, including photos, and sells for $19.95. Sen. Hatch was a bellwether figure in the impeachment saga, --says Roderick, owing in good part to his stature as chairman of the powerful Senate Judiciary Committee, but also to his reputation in Washington as a healer who consistently puts statesmanship ahead of partisanship. After Clinton refused to change his ways, notes Roderick, Hatch voted to remove him from office, and led Senate efforts to ensure that history would record the seriousness of Clintons misdeeds.
