Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY AUGUST 25, 1899 Opinion A The good, bad and the ugly Something was gained and something lost in the RS2477Title V monument roads conflict. To say the volatile issue brought forth strong emotions, would be an understatement. The good news was that for the first time, people really got involved in an issue. It was a strong statement to have 800 plus people in attendance at a public hearing. That has never happened here to my knowlege. Public hearings concerning our children's education, a new school, jail higher taxes, and water issues, have never drawn more than a dozen people. A Utah state legislative session was held at our high school last year, less than 20 people attended. Let's face it, we aren't known for our local government involvement, we're known for our griping. The bad news is that while some people quietly got educated and involved, others jumped on the "rights" bandwagon without ever fully understanding the issue or the events which led to it. All they knew was the Commission was "selling their rights down the river." Unfortunately, there were some who attacked people instead of issues. Just because a person views an issue differently, does not mean that they should be treated poorly or maligned. People of above average intelligence talk about ideas. People of average intelligence talk about issues. People of below average intelligence talk about people. The road ahead may be rough but if we can all respect each others' opinions, we can work together for the good of the county. I urge Kane County citizens to continue and expand their involvement in local government issues. Letters to the Editor What is your opinion ? Riding questions Sheriffs wisdom - Dear Editor: Last week, August 11th, an event occurred that distressed me very much. Although Ive never written to the paper to express my views, I just couldnt let this one pass without comment. Dont get me wrong, I applaud the Sheriffs office efforts to apprehend criminals and prevent the spread of drugs with an aggressive drug policy. But, I was appalled that they would have such total disregard for human welfare that they would recruit a person with a wife and four children under the age of 14 into their informant program. A former drug user, he had been clean for three years. The Sheriffs office recruited him anyway, knowing full well that to be an effective informant, a person must do drugs with the target to gain his confidence. His family was totally in the dark about his recruitment. When I confronted the officer in charge, his reply was, Well, he volunteered. Im sure this makes his wife and children feel better. Without a second thought, the drug force, in my opinion, recklessly endangered the welfare of this innocent family. This shows me that they will go to any lengths to reach their objective, no matter who is harmed. Last week I read in the local paper how the officers are vying with one another to see who can make the most drug arrests. Its like a game to them.
