Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY Opinion APRIL 23, 1899 4 Dixie Speaks used to have little tolerance for people who possessed a "minority mindset." And of course, I couldn't have understood. I was farm girl living in an area where everyone a white, middle-clas- s was of the same basic economic, ethnic and religious background I as myself. I felt a "minority mindset" was a way of looking at life. I thought it was a way of blaming the majority for certain prejudices and attitudes, and never taking responsibility for their own actions. Until I was 16, and I went to visit my sister in New Orleans. I boarded a city bus and was shocked to discover I was the only white person. As the bus took me to my destination, I just knew all the other riders were looking at me, thinking negative thoughts, and making certain assumptions about me. The odd thing was they probably weren't thinking anything bad about me at all. But it was the sheer number of people different than me, that made me have a type of inferiority complex. As I went to college and began to have friends of many different ethnic backgrounds, I discovered that they really were no different than me. They had some of the same hopes, dreams and fears, as I self-piteo- us did. Most of our "differences" had been in my head. I think most of us, upon reflection of the Columbine High School tragedy, know something like that could happen anywhere. Anger and frustration comes when people are hurting and feeling like they don't belong. In our society, people of the same religion, interests and background tend to stick together. There's comfort in numbers. Our fears and distrust of others who are different than us usually is not warranted. We, as adults and as parents, need to tear down some of the walls in our community, as well as in our homes. We need to stress that just because someone is different, it does not mean they aren't speciaL.and a true gift from God. Attitudes start at home and then generate out. Why not start some good ones?
