Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 24, 1989 Community Word on the Street With Mike Tyson going back to prison, should he ever be allowed to fight again? 4, T ' WJMSSiSiMt1 r- - vw , i f jr 'U 4 O Is a new seat belt law needed? By Trooper Terry C. Smith Utah Highway Patrol Public Information and Education Officer Do we need to change the law in Utah? You can probably guess my position on this. I really think it is time for Utah to make some strides forward. Many people, including a lot of our state senators and legislators, believe a primary law would infringe on our freedom of choice. Well, what about the freedom of those of us who wear seat d of the belts? Less than for costs of crashes are paid by the victims. As taxpayers and we all insurance costs. of for the the majority pay unbelted crash victims had If used seat belts, Utah could have saved 128 lives and 390 hospital days, plus $8,670,598 was spent on hospital charges for unbelted Utahans. Of those charges, $7,487,472 (86) could have been saved if unbelted Utahans had been belted. That means you and I made some really big payments last year. Pain and suffering are not exclusive to the victim. Family and friends are also affected. In our society, personal freedom ..stops where others are killed or injured. If a child is injured or killed by an accidental shooting, we are in a mad rush to pass new laws for gun safety. The truth is, the number one killer of children in Utah is vehicle crashes, yet I dont see many people tryingto stop or slow down this slaughter that occurs every year on our roadways. i - J V one-thir- r " V , - - "No, Ijust think he 's a low life. Last year I had the opportunity to teach a child safety class in Iowa. The belt, use in Iowa is around 90 percent. It is amazing, they give communities injury or death that drivers along the Wasatch Front. Notification time and response time for emergency medical service is longer. The rural areas of the state are heavily impacted by travelers from outside the state. These drivers and passengers often incur the highest financial impact and the lowest reimbursement rate to the communities. This results in rural communities paying higher medical costs and and taxes for out-o- f county drivers. I dont know about you, but I really think we need to change the way we are doing things. If you agree, I suggest you contact your state legislators and senator and let them know its time to change the way we do awards for having 90 percent compliance with seat belts and child restraints. .They asked me was and 'I was what our-ratembarrassed to tell them we were only in the 60 percent range, and in rural Utah, we were even worse.
