These pioneers valued education so much that they built schools before they built their homes. Dixie College exists today because of their vision and commitment to education. Whitehead said the monument is an edifice which lists the names of over 900 individuals who were original settlers and 1869. It includes lifesize sculptures by two local, nationally recognized artists, LDeane Trueblood and Jerry Anderson. The sculptures by Trueblood depict education and consist of a schoolmistress listening to a girl read while on her lap and a boy who is working on mathematics on a slate board. Andersons sculptures depict industry and hard work. One shows a surveyor with instruments as he is laying out the city; the other shows a man with a shovel diverting water from a nearby spring. The monument is 180 feet wide by 80 feet deep, at the top of the north oval of the encampment mall, said Whitehead. It is framed by a five foot sandstone wall with water weeping out over the rocks into a common pool. The sculpture pieces are situated in traditional desert vegetation similar to what the pioneers found upon arrival. The monument names are on a vertical column seven feet high and six feet wide. The column is in the center of a concrete pad in front of the sandstone backdrop. School began in a wagon box, and the laying out of the city started the day after the first pioneers said arrived, Whitehead. Education and art have remained a thrust of the community ever since.' - ; |
