Casting my three Annies When we announced the casting of Annie we hoped there would be one little girl in our community, who would have the voice, the look and the toughness that is Annie. A little orphan girl left on the steps of a New York orphanage. All that was known about her was that her name was Annie, and that she was born October 22. Around her neck was a broken locket, and in her pocket a note from her parents saying they loved her and would be back for her as soon as they could. The note and locket gave Annie the hope she needed to sustain her during the longyears of washing, scrubbing and sewing that were typical of orphanages during the Depression. Annie not only survived but helped the other girls keep alive their dreams of a better life outside the orphanage. The story of Annie is truly a modem day fairy tale of a dream that comes true and everyone lives happily ever after. Over fifty girls auditioned for parts in our community production. We were awestruck at the amount of talent these children displayed. Our decision became more and more difficult as the girls paraded across the stage. We decided to double cast the orphans making 12 orphans instead of six, and stage the play with all 12. The Annie decision was even more difficult. We finally narrowed our selection down to three. Ten year old Kelly Sweet, 12 year old Chandi Budd, and 12 year old Sarai Colson. Each girl will get their own show night. This makes for an even bigger challenge for the girls who must work even harder on their own, because limited stage time has to be split three ways. We think its great that we can encourage their talent and give each a chance to grow and learn. Kelly is thedaughterofCandace Sweet and Jeffrey Sweet. She was bom in Falmouth, MA. On March 29,1998. Kelly exhibits many artistic talents. She not only sings, dances and acts, but she is an accomplished artist. A talent she inherited from her mother Candace who teaches art in the schools, and who is helping with the artwork on the sets. Kelly says her hobbies are reading, drawing, and watching movies, I like drama because its fun to get on the stage and just have FUN, FUN, FUN! Her favorite color is green and her favorite food is pumpkin pie. When she grows up, she wants to be an artist, actor, singer or writer. I think she could be all four. Chandi is the daughter of Richard and Mariel Budd. She was born in Provo on October 26,1985. She has three sisters and two brothers, all of whom have grown up and live all over the country. Chandi says she likes drama because its fun and gives her a chance to express herself. Playing Annie is really fun and the cast has been great, when Im not practicing for Annie, I like to draw, read and do Aromatherapy projects. Chandis favorite color is blue, she loves animals and doesnt have a favorite food. When I was little, I was loud and obnoxious. Some said a lot like Annie, fearless of anything, and ready to face the world. Now I feel like Im shy. But I got the part of Annie, so 1 guess I havent changed that much. Sarai is the daughter of Tina Judd and George Colson. She was bom in Tucson, AZ on March 25,1986, Sarai now lives in Fredonia. The reason I like to perform is the applause. I like the applause after youre all f.nished. Sarai also thinks its fun meeting new people, making new friends. As directors we have really enjoyed watching the friendship, and support our three Annies have given each other. Each wants the other t'o do well. Sarai also says she loves her directors Linda and Norma. (Gee, thanks Sarai) The community saw Sarai four years ago as a little princess in the King and I. She has four sisters and one brother. She wants to grow up and be a lawyer. We hope your marking your calendars for July 30, 31 and August 1. Tickets will be going on sale soon. For information you can contact Mary Glazier at 1 1 7 .
