They included homeless people and street people from this disadvantaged neighborhood - even local drug dealers who wanted to help out in an unusual mission of mercy. The condemned apartments in the building had already been boarded up, the families had all left, and the demolition, team was ready to bring the building down. But dozens of other residents were still huddled inside and Lynn and her team were determined to get them out before demolition brought them certain death. By the end of the day, Knuckles and Whitey and Sloopy and Midnight and Fluffy and Elvis and dozens more cats and kittens were safely in the arms of Lynn and the other volunteers. And in the days that followed, the cats were all spayed and neutered, and most had been placed in new homes. For her part, Detective Lynn was ready for her vacation. Best Friends is now a r destination or point for animal lovers from all over the country. On any given day at this time of year, upwards of 70 vacationers can be touring the sanctuary and helping take care of the animals. Indeed, by the end of June this year, almost as many people had visited here as during the whole of 1997. long-planne- stop-ove- d country. Abandoned by his former owners when they moved, Benton went in search of them and got hit by a car. He came to Best Friends just when we were drawing up plans for a new facility for cats with disabilities. Bentons House, as it was named, is a favorite for g visitors. I shed quite a few tears when we had to leave, said Kim, because the cats are so happy at cat-lovin- Bentons House. Diane Kaeser is a pre-veteri-na- ry student at Purdue Univer- sity in Indiana, and Best Friends was her choice as the perfect place to spend a summer vacation as an intern.', All it takes is a wag of a tail or a slobbery kiss and you knowyoure doing a good job, she laughed! Her father and mother, who were touring the southwest for their own vacation, joined Diane at Best Friends for a few days. Her father, Dr. Terry Kaeser, is a veterinarian in Indiana and was able to consult with our own vet, Dr. Rich Allen, about one or two of the animals who had just arrived with some special medical needs. Vacationers are always quick to say how much they appreciate Kanab and its people. Friendly and helpful are the words they use most frequently. We love the sanctuary and we love the town, said one family on their way home to New Hampshire. Its the perfect place for people who care about animals and nature. !?
