Show Feature SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY f DECEMBER 24. 1997 A most incredible Christmas By Barbara Pyles On December 12, a plane from Santa Rosa, California, rolled down the runway at McCanran International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada. Among the passengers was Amy Duehring, her two daughters. Chelsey and Riley and her future husband, Wayne Freeman. About the same time a plane from Orlando, Florida, carrying Sable Max and her friend, Christopher Dtrocher, had just reached its cruising altitude. There's nothing nicer than she ringthe joy of Christmas with your family. And for Mac Williams of Kanab that meant getting together with not only his daughter, but a granddaughter and two that he had never met It all started about twenty-seve- n years ago in Lansing, Michigan. A young mother bent over the crib to pick up her child. How pretty my daughter Is, she thought. Then she did the hardest thing a mother cou Id ever do. The heartbroken mother placed her daughter for adoption. Her arms felt empty and her eyes great-granddaughte- rs nine-month-o- ld were wet with tears. It was an uncertain time in her life; she made a decision that was right for her child. Since then, there hasnt been a day thats gone by that Sable Max hasnt thought of her little girl. My daughter did the best thing that she could. She has cried about it ever since, but she was only 16, says Williams. Sable asked me quite a few years ago if I ever thought about her littlegirl, and I said all of the time. She was born my granddaughter. She is part of my blood and will always be a member of my family. Growing up, Amy had loving parents and she knew from the very beginning that she was adopted. Yet, she only knew the barest details of how her life began. Amy was curious, she wanted to know more. So about four years ago, she began to search for her mother. Despite the fact that the months turned into years, Amy didnt give up. Unable to find her mother, she managed to get the telephone number of her grandfather, Mac Williams. At first I didnt believe it," says Williams. It was the best piece of news I ever had. I have worried about this girl for years. If someone told Sable that her life would change with one phone call, she would not have believed them. When I first heard from Amy, I was absolutely shocked. I also felt very relieved and very lucky, says Sable. Obviously I did the right thing. The proud mothers heart swelled with pride as she smiled at her daughter. Just look at her. I feel extremely lucky that things turned out so well. Sable said she was adjusting to the news that she was the grandmother of two beautiful girls. Amy had this to say. It has been a nice confirmation that everything happened for a reason and basically everything happened the right way. It is a good thing to go back and find out where you came from and to see someone who kind of looks like you. The Williams home, the week before Christmas, was truly a family affair: a day of renewed love, togetherness and a promise that the family will always keep in touch.
