Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS Community 20 WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER S.1W7 Condor update r , i Y I Eleven California condors are now flying the Arizona skies. Since the last newsletter, two birds have been taken back into captivity because of behavorial problems. One was deemed unbut the suitable for be soon. released other may birds would Given that these normally be taken care of by their parents, the few incidents we have seen thus far are to be expected. Still, we hope that in the future the more experienced birds in the wild will model the necessary skills for inexperid birds to enced, survive. On a very positive note, the 1 1 condors continue to take long reconnaissance flights farther and farther from the release site. This makes it harder to track and monitor their progress, but promotes confidence in the birds, which are clearly becoming more comfortable in the wild, and among the people involved with the program. Recently a report came in from Moab, Utah about a condor sighting. Initially discounted by some folks because of the distance from the release site, it was in fact a condor. The bird was soaring over a National Park, near a golden eagle nest. A park ranger said the pair of golden eagles had recently fledged young, which meant the young condor encountered them while they were in a defensive mood. This put project biologists in an immediate state of concern because another condor died earlier this year, due to wounds inflicted by a golden eagle. The initial result from this second encounter was probably much like what happened in the fatal encounter, but fortunately the ending was different The golden eagles did force the condor to the ground, but after about four attempts to take flight the condor regained the airways. Shawn Farry, from the Peregrine Fund field crew, described the successful launch as if he were the father of the lost youngster. Shawn soon lost the signal of the transmitter on the condors wing, so he headed back to the release site. As it turns out, the condor beat him home! Early the next morning, the birds signal was picked up at the Vermilion Cliffs. Shawns trip back took a lot longer. On July 29, 10 of the 11 con- -. dors were accounted for at the release site. Early in the morning, we noticed a new bird, almost as large as a condor, but definitely not a turkey vulture. It turned out to be yet another golden eagle. This encounter proved to be another positive experience. It appears as though the condors and eagles are finally getting used to each other. re-relea-se, - newly-release- top ,iFfe ' IV b ' The Color Country Dusters Drill Team is pictured above (I r): Loma Gregg, Bridget Hancock, Jim Pardee, dice Wilkey, Colette Jourdain, Kristen Mortenson, Georgia Bentley, Anita Black, Linda Atvey, June Stroschein, Dallas and Leann Bamhurst. -- Color Country Dusters headed for state Color Country Dusters Drill winning District Competition in Color Country Dusters Riding Club Drill Team and members team took top honors in Parade Beaver in July.
