Show Feature Dance is good for everyone By Barbara Pyles Kids of all ages love to dance. Accordingto Kara (Christensen) Campbell, instructor and founder of Totally Technique , children can benefit from the flexibility and grace gained in dance training. Dance is good for everyone, she says. It gives children a great deal of self-confiden- ce and self-estee- Campbell says she teaches a lot of technique and stresses body position. Her students, ages three to sixteen, are divided into three classes: tap and basic movements, a combination ballet and jazz and straight jazz. In the tap and basic movement class, the students learn how to move to the beat of the music, some simple steps, coordination and personal expression. She divides the combination ballet and jazz class into three parts. During the first fifteen minutes of the class, students focus on the fundamentals of classical ballet technique, such as body position, body placement, and simple steps. This is followed by across the floor kicks, split leaps, and toe touches. During the last half of the class, the student zeros in on specific dances. In the straight jazz class, the student concentrates on jazz dance technique. The student also spends a good deal of time working on competition style dancing. Campbell says all classes increase flexibility, strength and coordination. She has students who have been studying dance from a very early age, and beginners who have never taken a dance class. Although Campbell places most ofher students accordingto their ages, she believes that age shouldnt be the only yardstick used in placing students. Campbell knows the importance of working from wherever the child is. Her goal is to help young dancers reach their potential, so that they will be able to compete in competition with other dancers on an even level. The dance instructor wants her student to be proud of their accomplishments, and she is always ready to applaud their every effort. Some of the students had an opportunity to display their tal- ents in the Orderville and Kanab schools. On July 9, her students performed at the Gazebo. Campbell did the choreography for all of the routines. The entire student body of Totally Technique is preparing for two exciting performances: a dance recital that is scheduled for the first week in September, and a Christmas Production. When her dancers are ready, Campbell will give them the opportunity to enter different competitions. By next summer, she hopes her students can attend a dance camp. Campbell received her early dance training in Mesa, Arizona at Kims Where Dance Is Taught Studio. She went on to perform with Kims Ballet Company, and danced with the Arizona Youth Theater. In addition, the talented dancer won a number of dance competitions sponsored by Dance Masters of America. When Campbell moved to Kanab, she found her options were limited as far as dance instructions. Campbell pursued her love of dancing with the Larriettes at Kanab High School. She was President and Drill Mistress of the Larriettes during her senior year, and was a member of the All State Drill Team. Campbell represented Kanab High School as a Sterling Scholar in Performing Arts, and was 1st Attendant to Miss Kane County in 1993. She also accompanied her team to the Las Vegas Open, where they won several awards. While attending SUU, she continued taking dance classes, working toward an associate degree in dancing. This school year, Campbell will be the dance instructor for the Little Larriettes. Campbell says she could al- ways rely on her mother, Debbie Christensen, who was once a ballet dancer, to give her professional critiques. My mom has worked a lot of hours with me, and has helped me quite a bit. Everyone has a dream and Campbell is no exception. Her dream of being a dance instruc- tor is starting to take shape. The enthusiastic Campbell said, It is fun to watch the girls go out on stage, and perform for the very first time. Many of them are scared to death, but after the first time they love it, they thrive on it. Although Campbell wants her students to have fun during class, she is also strict to a certain extent. I want the girls to pay attention and learn while they are in class, she says. Dance classes are offered at the Community Center by Campbell every Thursday after3 noon.
