Prejudice and discrimination issue zens in Kanab also see this as an issue of prejudice and discrimination by our City Government. And all prejudice and discrimiDear Editor I am writing in response to nation are detrimental to all your article titled Fernandos people. denied beer license for the third Jane Hansen Kanab time. I chose Kanab as a place to retire because of its beauty and small town atmosphere. I also thought it was a town diverse enough to accept outsiders. Jt never bothered me to be an outsider, as I have always felt welcome in every area of town.. When I went to get my library card or registered my car, everyone treated me fairly and with respect. After following the lack of progress in Fernandos being able to get a simple class D beer license, I felt compelled to write. I feel they are being completely discriminated against, for what reason I have no idea. The City Council said it was because of the neighbors voicing objections, that were not voiced in other areas where beer licenses were granted. In all fairness I feel that any residential area has to accept the fact that ifthere is commercial property near them, that property will be used commercially. I personally dont drink, but can definitely see how the act of not allowing a Mexican Restaurant (in a Commercial Zoned Area) to have a class D" beer license, would put that restaurant out of business in short order. Most of the money made in Kanab comes from tourist trade and it has been proven by other restaurants that tourists want a beer with their meal. The idea of allowing some restaurants to receive a class D beer license while singling out another to say No (three times), is totally unfair. I realize my opinion doesnt cany much weight, but my vote carries as much as any other citizen. After the statement by the mayor about this issue NOT going before the council again while he is mayor, tells me one thing, I will do everything I can to make sure that he is not mayor after the next election. And the same goes for the three council-me- n who voted in such a discriminatory way. I live a fairly quiet retired life here in Kanab, and I plan to stay. I have never written a letter to the editor, but in good conscience I just had to respond to this injustice. I would be willing to bet that most of the citi First impressions Dear Editor: In your Dixie Speaks article of June 11, 1997, you stated first impressions are lasting ones. How true that is. As a customer, I recently experienced a positive first impression at several local businesses I was greeted with a smile, treated with courtesy and was made to feel that 1 was important as a customer. The young men at NAPA Auto Parts and Lumber Plus and the young waitresses at the Wok Inn and the Junction Drive In are to be commended for their attitude towards the customer. I apologize for not knowing their names, but I imagine their employers know who I mean as they will make a difference in their businesses.
