Show 80UTHEBN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY Opinion JUNE IS, 1W7 D Ml Speaks Three times and you're out? Rights, issues and ideals sometimes get confused. Many Utahns fiercely support an American's right to live, work and worship in the matter in which they choose. They abhor government regulations or taxation. Rules or zoning restrictions are often met with animosity. These are all noble attitudes-ou-r country is made up of people with different priorities, focuses and beliefs... and that is all well and good... if they are applied to everyone. Fernando's Hideaway in Kanab has been denied beer license by the Kanab City Council for a third a time. In our community. Parry's Lodge has a liquor license (which is in illegal, but grandfathered proxim- ity to the middle school). Councilman Tony Wright has recently been granted a beer license for cookouts at Denny's Wigwam, Wok Inn has a beer license in a residential setting, Nedra's Too also enjoys a beer license, and both our grocery stores and most of our convenience stores sell beer. But the newcomer can't have one. Why is that? Fernando's Hideaway is in a commercially-zone- d area, where the previous restaurant owner had a beer license. They have met all state and local law enforcement requirements, but they still can't have one because our council and some of the neighbors say they don't want it. no excuse for it. The Pick and choose politics-there- 's behavior by council members Holland, Henderson and Wright demonstrate prejudice and an intolerable lack of respect for peoples' rights. They can do it for one of their own, but they won't do it for a newcomer to the community. Mayor Adam's comment about never considering the issue again while he is mayor, shows an incredible amount of disrespect for the entire community that he represents. Council members Coleman and Crawford should be congratulated for realizing that a person's rights supercede another person's discomfort. The Richs', Fernandos owners, have been treated rudely, and not in a manner according to the citizens that they are. Are you brave enough, gutsy and American enough, to admit that the same rules apply to all people? In Kanab, does three times mean you're out...or does it mean that you've just been fouled by prejudicial views? law-abidi- ng to the many wonderful friends who spent nights with Eva last summer following her hip injury.
