Our youngest son asked me recently. Career choice has been a big topic of discussion at our house, with our oldest son preparing to go away to college. His question made me smile. Even as adults, are we ever really sure? An article in the Wall Street Journal said that the average person will change careers two to three times in their life. Career choice is an interestnot always according thing-it- s ing to Hoyle. What logic dictates n you should do with the skills you possess, isnt always what you end up doing. According to aptitude tests, I was supposed to be a psychiatrist or social worker. They supposedly arrived at this revelation by looking at IQ, interests and the fact I was always trying to fix everybodys problems. Instead, now Im an editor who causes everybody headaches. When I was little, occupations were more gender specific. Little girls grew up to be nurses, and boys were supposed to grow up to be doctors or lawyers. But times have changed. I bought a doll for a friends new mistake. baby girl-bi- g We wont allow our daughter to be exposed to sexual stereotypes, the mother said sternly. We wont let her wear dresses and we only let her play with d trucks and typically toys. I was sent packing b and a with my Baby diatribe on feminism! While Ive always supported the concept of men and women getting equal pay for equal work, I do have a small concern (perhaps curiosity is a better word) about women in stereotypically male-typ- e jobs. Men and women are different, few would argue that. My niece is a model who decided to join the Army for a couple of years. When I asked her what God-give- male-oriente- Rub-A-Du- field she was going into, she responded that she was going to program and operate Patriot missiles. I remember thinking that if she had a bad PMS day, she could wipe out a whole country! But she ended up loving it, and apparently did a great job. Career choice is simple when youre young. The job you dream of doesnt need to be glamorous or just has to be cool. Kids want to grow up to be a cowboy, baseball player, scoop ice cream at Baskin-Robbin- s or run carnival rides. One little boy told me that he wanted to be a garbage man when he grew up. When asked why, he looked at me with that duh look that kids have mastered, because you get to hang on to the side of the truck when youre working. As kids get older, they tend to want occupations that they see on television and in the movies. The media plays an important part in image creation. My son wanted to be a black athlete when he grew up. Personally, I keep waiting to grow up and have the body of a Baywatch girl. A crucial factor in career selection when youre a teenager is going into something other than what your parents desire for you. Teens are also similar to high-paying- -it Prenatalbirthing classes will be held at the Kane County Hospital in the Kane County Hospital Employee Lounge at 7 p.m. starting on August 7.
