Measles-fig-ht Vaccinations can ip- help outbreak in Utah Two local home health agencies are networking their re- sources with the Southwest Utah Public Health Department in Kane County and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), based in Atlanta, Georgia, to help bringthe Washington County measles outbreak under control. Southern Utah is continuing to experience measles outbreak, agrees Dr. ManzilaTarande and Dr. Hugh Mainzer of the CDC. Fifty-nin- e cases have been documented in Washington County. The most recent two were reported May 30. That number may not seem large, but that is 59 cases more than we would expect. It is the largest outbreak in the U.S. this year, so far. There have been 228 cases reported to the CDC from throughout the country to this point in 1996. While there is no need to panic, it is important that those individuals who are in the at risk category, seek immunization. The at risk category is anyone who is in a school setting, public or private, including day care or college, faculty and staff, and health Vaccine for the upcoming immunizations is provided by the CDC and the Utah Dept, of Health. The coalition of home health agencies is assisting the Southwest Utah Public Health Department in donating personnel and other resources for this community health care effort. According to Dr. Mainzer, immunization efforts are targeted immediately to those who have not yet received measles vaccinations and then to children and teens who have received only one dose of the vaccine. The CDC gives these general guidelines for measles immunization: Two doses ofmeasles vaccine, generally given as MMR, are recommended for all children after the first birthday. The first dose should be given when children are between 12 and 15 months of age. The second dose should be given when children enter kindergarten (4-- 6 years of age). . Persons vaccinated with live measles vaccine before their first birthday should be considered unvaccinated. Arizona Highway Patrol officer Mark Gilberg said that the June 10 accident occurred when driver Evelyn H. Martin, 73, also of Page, fell asleep at the wheel. Martins car first ran into the right guardrail, and across then she both lanes to the left. The vehicle struck the guardrail on the other side, taking out 25 feet of the metal railing.
