Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS Community Him Cover crops are not just for a wintertime cover for the soil as you well know, if you have been readingthis column for any length of time at all. To cover the soil from sun and wind any time of the year does not only the soil a great favor, but the gardener as well, by providing continuous food and organic matter to improve the soil and bring it health, whether or not it is in production. To provide a soil cover however, while plants are growing is not only a benefit to the soil but a blessing to the crop it is around! Mulching, whether using dead or live material is of exceptional benefit to soil, plants and gardeners in our area because it is so arid. Whatever the time of year if there are bare spots in the garden, cover them! Cover crop expert, Bob Hofstetter, at Rodale Institute Research Center, says the best type of cover crop for you is, The one thats physically easiest for you.The pushovers include winter and spring wheat, winter and spring barley, spring oats, grain rye and (Btso si sweet clovers. Buckwheat too, if you time it right. Either till it in before it sets seed or plant so it is killed by frost before seeds form. Buckwheat is an exceptional summer cover crop in that in our region its possible to get at least three covers of it in one season, by tilling it in just after it blossoms and before it sets seed. It is a good weed eradicator for its quick to germinate and shade the ground before the weeds have a chance to show. Ive found two good suppliers of cover crop seed for our mountain west gardens with prices postpaid. Garden City Seeds and Territorial Seed Co. They can supply a summer or winter combination cover crop seed or you can buy any of the single crop seed you choose. SeptOct. As we understand it, Jim was doing a cowboy job when he and his horse parted company. Apparently the horse wanted to go one way, and Jim the other, and guess who won? Now we have also heard a rumor that Barb got mad and let him have it, guage. After consultation with wildlife agent Scott White, we are now in the know. This week Rick Ensle has a birthday and, although hes getting so old, and probably in hiding, we want to wish him well. Rick was our right-han- d man when we first began the newspaper in Kanab. Its all right, Rick, its so much better to have a birthday than the alternative! Last week was the last football game for the High School freshmen this season. Perhaps its just as well. That wind was COLD! I used to marvel at the loyal Wisconsin fans who would sit out in zero degree weather and watch the Green Bay Packers play. Then I realized that most of them had on enough clothes to defeat North Pole weather! Besides that, a number of them were well fortified but, as we said, thats just a rumor! Jim was badly bruised and battered, and had some difficulty seeing out of one eye, but hes coming along and will soon be back to his old, jolly self. In the Sun recently we were introduced to a new word. It threw us for a bit, and turns out that we even misspelled it. The word was hygraded. It was used in connection with a poaching story. Ahunter(s) had shot some deer, and then upon seeing how small they were, left them to with thermoses of steaming coffind a bigger kill.
