So, Im going to remind you about planting for a fall harvest. The space where you grew the early spring peas, lettuce, spinach and cole crops should have long ago been cleaned out and waiting for these very same crops, which always like cooler weather to grow in, making fall ideal with the bonus of many less pests to contend with. Just make sure you dont put the same crops in the same place. Thats the first line of defense against all pests, regardless of when you plant. There are any number of plusses for fall planting. Its not quite as busy as spring. We here are usually blessed with weeks of beautiful Indian Summer days following that initial fall frost that can add to the growing time, using those earliest maturing varieties. There are a number of vegetables that have maturity dates of less than sixty days. Kentucky Wonder bush beans (45), Gold Rush zucchini (45), SRCCGD hupo unless youre already zuked out! Green Comet broccoli (55), Snow Crown cauliflower ) which by the way, around here does much better in the fall than the spring cauliflower because our springs are so short. The roots, kohlrabi (43) and Minicor carrots (55) are further protected because of the soil they are grown in does not get frost until much later. One other plus, as stated above is that the cycle of most pests has passed. However, still be alert. Theres usually a renegade or two in all (50-53- species! One thing for sure! Do at least one of two things. If you choose not to plant for fall, clean out those rows or beds where the crops are past their prime. Dont provide a winter home for pests. Till the area, sow annual rye grass, water and mow it as long as its green. Leave the cuttings on the ground as food for the soil. Frost will kill it and it will be an excellent winter cover for the soil! Happy fall growing!
