Using the plant wastes from these gardens wil not bring about the results spoken of above, because it is this very soil life that activates the breaking down ofwastes and brings about the composting process. This mixture after decomposition supplies both organic matter to build soil and a wide range of nutrients to feed plants. The bacteria and fungi found naturally on plants and soil are 6 As stated before, there is no one method for composting. The gardener can use whatever procedure he prefers, but its impor-tan- t to understand that composting, in whatever way, is what every gardener should involve himself in ifhe would truly have the very best soil to grow plants in. Carbon, which is the material, serves as food for the bacteria. Nitrogen, the dry-brow- n waste provides the means for growing more bacteria. Perhaps now you may see why I continually remind the reader to use those fallen leaves in the garden as well as grass cuttings, rather than haul them off to the dump or burn them. Stock-pil- e them if you choose, but save them and use them when you can. By tilling in the mulch used during the growing season after harvest, and adding the fall leaves also, Im satisfied that Im feeding the soil for the coming spring. A cover crop over it all will add an even greater amount of nutrients. One caution concerning leaves. Do not use Black Walnut leaves. This tree gives off a substance that inhibits plant growth. Perhaps this has been apparent to green-we- t the gardener who has tried to grow plants beneath the dripline of a Black Walnut tree. Orchestra begins summer rehearsals KC Rehearsals for the summer program planned by the Kanab Civic Orchestra begins June 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Kanab High School music room. Performances are scheduled for the July 24 celebration, the Washington and Garfield County Fairs, and as part of the Wednesday evening at the gazebo program. There is lots of new and exciting music to learn, as well as favorite pieces from past performances. In the fall, concerts are planned for Halloween and Christmas. Unfortunately, the Utah Ballet will not be available to perform the Nutcracker this year as they are involved with special programs for the Utah Centennial celebrations. KCO will continue to rehearse the music and pursue scheduling the Nutcracker for Christmas time in 1996. All orchestra members are urged to come to the first rehearsal on June 1 to pick up music, get the rehearsal and performance schedule, and to get back into the swing of things. Anyone who would like to become a new member of KCO should contact Kortney Stirland at Zion Pharmacy, or come to the Thursday night 644-269- 3, |
