Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS Opinion 4 WEDNESDAY MAY 24, 1995 Dixie Speaks Schools in our area will be having their graduation this week. Several years ago I attended my nephew's graduation. I was prepared to endure the usual pomp and circumstance speech that has bored parents and students since time began. But something unusual was said at this graduation by Mary Murphy, University of Wisconsin's women's basketball coach, something that touched my heart and has stuck in my mind ever since. I'd like to share it with you. Murphy began by congratulating all the achievers, both academic and athletic. She told them that they had set their goals high, and had utilized their assets. She then proceeded to talk to the other graduates, and I'm going to try to sum up some of what she said. "I'd now like to talk to the 'other' kids in this high school graduating class, the ones holding their breath until they see the signed diploma. You know who you are. I was one of you. How many times during high school did you think that it'd be easier to quit? You may of even gotten into some trouble occasionally. There were probably countless times in the past four years that you thought the whole world was against you. There were many times when you felt like a failure." "And what about you kids who sat on the bench every game? The ones who would just automatically go down to the end of the basketball bench, because you knew the coach was never going to play you. You're the ones who showed up for every practice, yet never got the opportunity to play. You were every bit as devoted as the starting team, but they got the glory." "I'd like to say hats off to the kids that success hasn't always come easily for. Congratulations for hanging in there, despite the fact the cards seemed stacked against you. You've made it, your perseverance has paid off!" "You've learned an important lesson. Most adults will tell you that an inevitable fact of life is that, at some point, you will experience failure. How you handle that failure and disappointment says a lot about the kind of person you are, and whether you are going to be able to pick yourself up, and start all over again. If you've never experienced disappointment, how can you really know the satisfaction of success?" The Southern Utah News would like to congratulate all high school graduates. One chapter of your life has been completed, it's time now to move on to the next. We wish you all the happiness, success and joy that life has to offer. Letters to the Editor What is your opinion?
