Show Community SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY APRIL 12, 1995 Solie heads for greener pastures By Dixie Brunner UtahArizona Action Team Economic Director Peter Solie is leaving for greener pastures. Does that mean hes taking a better salary, or that his new job is in the greener Midwest? Actually both. Peter Solie has taken a job as economic director in Warrensburg, Missouri, a community of approximately 16,000. He will be working for the Warrensburg Chamber of Com- the merce. Solie and his family moved here a little over a year ago, taking a position with UAAT. 80 of his salary was funded through a U.S. Forest Service grant, with the other Elisha Bunting (I) and Kendra Glover were chosen for the Utah Team. were There four Clogging only girls picked. Im sorry to leave, comSolie. mented the But Peter Solie cant work for pennies, and thats what hed make ifhe continued living here. The problem is that there was no funding to continue the program, and I could not find enough additional monies, said Solie. Grant money for economic development is out there. The State of Utah gave us four separate grants this year alone, points out Solie. It just wasnt enough. While the U.S. Forest Service continues to fund a significant chunk of money, it will not be as much. The issue is more whether you could fund the position beyond a year, said Solie. This year the money cant be used for straight administrative costs, it must be for projects. We are developing projects with them. Solie, while not bitter over his brief stay here, insists that the area needs to commit to economic development. Everyone in this area has friends or family that were affected by the recent Kaibab layoffs. We need to start being proactive, rather than reactive. Commitment comes in many different forms. It can mean that thebusinesscommunityputs their heads and resources together. Most Utah counties fund economic development on their own, rather than rely on grant money. They fund an economic director as part of their budget items, said Solie. Some cities do it as well. Attitude is everything, Solie says. There are individuals here who would prefer no development. People need to be realistic, we have heads of homes here who are desperate to find work. Economic development doesnt happen overnight. It can be a long process, and many western communities start with a strike Former UAAT economic director Peter Solie and his family moved to Missouri last weekend after the funding for his position ran out. major cities in the west. Richfield cant say that. While the Solie familys stay here was brief, theyre not sorry they came. Kanab and Fredonia are great places, said Solie. The influx of outsiders wont be stopped because Im not here. There are 4,000,000 people coming through this area, there are going tQ be a few of them who want to stay. The reason I existed was to make sure that growth was possible and positive. against them. Kanab and Fredonia are a long way from transportation means, said Solie. Once the companies come, they will realize that theyre compensated by quality of life. We need to pursue individuals and companies who value that.
