Show School SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS TUESDAY FEBRUARY 16, 1993 9 The Tassel is worth the hastle By Cody Spendlove This week lets discuss a myth. Acutally, its not a myth but more like a rumor - part of it is true and part isnt. One of the most frequently asked questions a counselor hears goes someo said that thing like this a $100,000,000.00 every year dollars or more of scholarship funds go unclaimed, can you get me some of that money? Sound fimilar? Sure its the stuff that sells newspapers and television time. The fact is that hundreds of millions of dollars that are earmarked for scholarships or grants do go unclaimed each year... most of it for one of two reasons, letsbriefly mention the first and go on to the second. The first reason (a) is that a So-n-s- large chunk of that figure are dollars set aside by companies for special incentives to their employees to take classes while working full time for that company. To quote Kenneth Ryder, reporting before the U.S. Congress on this very subject, I must say in passing that one of the fascinating bits of information that the commission found was that something like $6 Billion dollars in tuition aid benefits are available through the corporate sector to employees. Mr. Ryder goes on to say that unfortunatly less than 12 of 1 of this money is currently being used. This is nice to know but it doesnt help much if youre a high school senior looking for help. The second reason (b) and where it does apply to high school students, is that dollars go un- claimed because of simple lack of preparation and effort on the part of students. These dollars readily availabe to students...IF they qualify. In other words, they are dollars with strings attached. For example, a student may are apply for a $1 000 scholarship from theNational Golf Association IF they have worked as a licenced golf caddie for at least two years while they were in high school. Or a student may be eligible for a $2500 grant from the National Horse and Buggy Association IF they or their parentshave a regis- tered horse and buggy business. The list goes on and on. There are literally thousands of such scholarships for almost every activity or event you can imagine. To keep up with some of them, our area high schools were given by the ETSUpWard Bound programs a 2" thick Scholarship Book that students can use to look up addresses and write to these groups to be considered for the award.
