Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS TUESDAY JANUARY 26, 1993 Opinion 4 Dixie Speaks Kanab's Little League Basketball season condudes this week. The local basketball program benefits boys in grades The season has offered plenty of good action, exciting plays, good exerdse for the kids, and (ahem) exerdse for their parents' vocal cords, as well. Through the years there has been debate over the value of athletic competition. Critics say sports encourage kids to be too competitive, often stressing winning at all costs. They say that kids who are not as athletic, can feel embarrassed about their abilities, and actually be harmed by sports involvement. My reply to them is NOT! Have you ever seen a kid who maybe isn't quite as coordinated, make his first basket? The exdtement and pride in his face is undeniable. d kids Have you ever watched a group of pull together for a common cause? Team work is a concept that young people need to possess. We have to work together with others on most everything we do, what's wrong with them learning those lessons in gentle athletic competition? There must be a lot of grateful parents and community members who must be thankful that the 100 plus boys who play basketball are channeling their time and energy to something positive. A kid that's playing sports is not hanging out on the street and causing trouble. There's a lot to be said about organized activity...for one, it keeps them busy! Let's talk about competition. It doesn't have to be a dirty word. I challenge you to show me even one aspect of life that doesn't involve competition. Competition, whether you approve of it or not, exists in every realm of our life. The idea of competition is a sound one. It encourages us to try a little harder; to be just a little better. We salute all the coaches who made this year's Little League Basketball season a success. If it weren't for your donation of energy and time, the basketball wouldn't be possible. We'd also like to tip our hat to Kevin Glazier who organizes and directs the youth basketball league. He is a positive and tireless worker who really cares about our local youth. Kevin is a terrific asset to this community. Congratulations kids on a great season. There IS a delicate ecological and humanitarian balance on earth and there IS a difference between subduing the earth and desecrating, raping, depleting or destroying it. My Lenape ancestors and many other related tribes were great cultivators of the earth and grew most of their food. It was not until they were driven off their lands, and some were seduced by the craving for material belongings, that they killed for basic sustenance or overtrapped to gain a surplus of furs.
