It's a nationwide observance sponsored locally by the Southwestern Utah Mental Health Alcohol and Drug Center. ditlieult to even think about, isn't Youth and drugs-it'- s it? It's hard to imagine young people doing anything that dangerous. Where has inmx'ence gone? Hut whv's evervone making such a big deal over drugs dont have youth drug and alcohol abuse in southern Utah We're text remote, and our good moral environment and principle's exempt our children from these problems. Drug and alcohol abuse are big city problems. We need toget our head out of the sand! It is happening here C.ixxi kids with great futures are being lured by anvwav? Southern Utah is a spee'ial place to live, but definitely not a utopia It's not immune to any of scx'iety's illnesses. We have the same problems anv othe'r place has. We aren't helping our kieis by pretending it dcxsn't happen here. Our children live in a complicated world where many of the rule's have been changed. They are inundated with TV anti magazines telling them how beautiful, sexy and fun it is to consume alcohol and drugs What can be done to address these problems? We have u to lx careful in our homes that we don't create a atmosphere, where we as parents aren't honest brought food, flowers or money, d holier-than-tho- s It's easy about our own temptations and to just sav no," but not nearlv as easv to practice. When we say, "no, vou can't do that, it's not gixxi for you," and then they see TV ads showing handsome men and sexy women drinking and having a blast, they're bound to have some confusing feelings. Share with your kids some of vour own trials. Explain to them why you believe that certain things are wrong. Both bovs I interviewed thought that hard work was one answer to keeping kids oft alcohol and drugs. They said when they were busy, they didn't have time to drink. Perhaps our businesses and schtxils should unite to create job opportunities for Kids. It could benetit everyone. The two bovs also felt it kids had to suffer immediate consequences for their actions, they wouldn't be as likely to do things repeatedly. The answers to youth drug and alcohol abuse are complicated and won't come easily. We need tobehone'st with eurselves and admit that iicould happen to our kid. Let's unite as a community to find the answers to the difficult problems of drug and alcohol abuse. Aren't our kids worth it? short-coming- Letters to the Editor What is your opinion?
