This is the seventh year of the Kanab 1 OK and during this time it has grown to be the biggest and most popular 10K in southern Utah. T-shi- rts 7 turning 40, and running has something to do with that, since its helped keep both her figure andher outlook youthful. In fact, Kathie Avery shes hoping to run her fastest 10K ever, as a 40 year old. Her running in it. But they got fastest previous time was 51 hooked when they ran in 1989, minutes and 11 seconds in the and this is their third year in a Spectrum lOKin St. George two months ago, and her goal on Saturday is to beat 50 minutes. Turning 40 is no big deal. She has a runners outlook on it The only reason Ive thought about it is because it will put me in a different age division Ill be a master (term for runners 40 and over). Chronological age doesnt mean much." With the Averys, the Kanab 10K has always been a family affair, and it will be so this year. Joining Kathie will be her husband, Brian, and sons, Chris and Kyle, 14 and 12 years old. Brian is a regular runner like Kathie, but the boys just get up for the 10K. Brian and Kathie certainly do it all in the local race, as they put in hours as part of the race committee, with planning and preparations for the race that start months before the event. They helped put on the race for two years before they started row to have all four Averys entered. Kathie is a teachers aide at Kanab Elementary School and Brian is the acting chief ranger of the Forest Services North Kaibab Ranger District. They both run regularly. Kathie figures she puts in about 30 miles a week. Runningis somethingyoucan totally control," she explains. I can go fast or slow, and I can decide how far I go and when. If I get up in the morning and put in a few miles, then no matter what happens, everything else seems easy." Kathie says she started running about 20 years ago because of Brian. He ran a lot, and he enjoyed it. It was something we could always do together. Hes always been my inspiration. Although shes been running on and off for half her life, it was only three years ago that Kathie ran her first race. In that first Kanab 10K, she ran with her son, Kyle. Since three years ago, shes entered about 1 0 races altogether, in either Kanab or St. George. One of her biggest running thrills was doing the St. George Marathon all 26.2 miles last October. She surprised herself and ran faster than sh e expected, crossing the finish in just one minute over four hours. But the Kanab 10K tops them all. I think its great," Kathie says. Its by far the best organized the course is great and the people in general. Its amazing the people it brings out And everyone is helping everybody. This year should be the best ever, but in general Kathie gets a double dose of pampering on this weekend because its her birthday and Mothers Day. Brian and the boys really spoil me," she says.
