Show r SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS Commentary MONDAY MARCH 11, 1991 Public Pulse On The Write Track Continued from Page 4 By Jeanette Rusk that Ive inevitable the question is how is re- - do we react to these changes and a lot about thought made a Ive years- - how do they affect our relation- lationships. A fascinating subject long study by experience, ob- reading, and discus-sion of this topic. I dont think 111 ever get it figured out, and, even if I do in the theoretical sense, Ill probably continue to have failures in practice. 5 ships. When we undergo indi- vidual change, do we change our commitment or our feelings to- ward the people were close to? Some people seem to have to change their people environment in order to accommodate their personal changes, and others can change and grow without sev-froering commitments, However, relationships should be growing, dynamic things, Most relationships could be saved if people would simply realize that a relationship is bunch of celery or maybe 5 oranges per month). With this money we could upgrade the existing facilities, hire a quali fied animal control officer with a truck, buy decent food neric) and use the services of a vet for euthanasia. Any money left over could go into a fund for future animal use. With the caveat that this philosophical treatise is coming someone whos made a lot of mistakes, 111 issue some of my observations and conclusions, I have been particularly in- terested in trying to figure out what makes relationships last, Im referring to close re- - built not something thats lationships based on choice, such there waiting to be discovered, A relationship is nurtured by real commu- blood ties. My interest stems communication naturally from havinghad quite nication, not saying what a bit of experience with these someone wants to hear. Being a kinds of relationships and listener as well as a talker, and sometimes with the ending of lettingpeople communicate their (non-ge-servatio- n, The following question was asked of a random sample of Ranchos residents: How important do you think it is that a new Ranchos access road connects with 300 South instead of someplace else? Would you say it is very important, somewhat important, or not important? 16 m poop in your yard every day we dont" I might add that we Somewhat Not Important Don't Know Very schtfol in kids had havent any for 40 years, but we are still tecting the public against such drama. First, students gain paying. The poor mouth" attitude perpetuates itself and brings to marriages and friendships were made in heaven. Some may have been made in that other place, When relationships are de-structive, it is better that they end. And sometimes it maybe necessary for them to end be-cause they are too inhibiting to individual growth. But for the vast majority of those other relationships, what it that determines whether they survive and maybe even thriveverthe tog terra? Well, I truly believe theres such a thing as sheer serendip- ity fortune or fate, if you will, Some things just happen. When it comes down to ex- amining the factors that make for a good relationship, one of the questions usually considered whether its better to be alike different, or whether the key is some kind of delicate balance, I really think even when you have just the right ingredients and in just the right proportions, the read determining factor is commitment. There is so much that would otherwise pull us apart in to- days world except in a very de-sio- ns USSf living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." Anna Krycki Appalled Im divorced and real feelings by not making value Dear Editor: relationships Ive lost friends. Ive got it down to three things that I think are crucial in de- teffhining the longevity of rela- tionships commitment, sense of humor, and adaptability. We shouldnt leap to the con- elusion that the ending of a re- lationship is always bad. Not all joyment with an outlet for self-I also understand that deci- - expression and it helps the have been made to benefit velopment of imagination and by 3Cti0n judgments on what they say. A sense of humor is powerful, Laugh and be physical. Hug. Going along with humor is adaptability the opposite of rigidity. Be accepting and under- standing ofyour spouse orfriend. Let him be himself. Dont even try to make him the way you want him to be, because it wont work and itll breed resentment. All of these factors Ive dis- cussed apply to both marriages and friendships, because they are similar in their basics, However, true friendship prob- ably is an even higher level of relationship than marriage. Of course, some marriages en- compass a true friendship the best and richest ones do. The reason that friendship maybe purer, if not higher, is because and its not so dependency-base- d stereonot so steeped in gender types. Marriage introduces some powerful new factors. People live together and by nature violateeach other's space and independence, and also there s the potent influence of a physical relation- ship. In summary, complex as re- - lationships are, these three. simple factors may be the key to keeping them intact com- mitment, sense of humor, and adaptability. There are several very important and highly sensitive jssues at stake. 1 Should we continue to levr a transient room tax if there is no functioning body to make recommendations regarding its expenditure? Were making it official now and as with any new program, it takes time to get it on its feet. Our goal is to put on a musical and two major productions a year, but to do things right and to make it an investment for the audience, it needs to be done right and money has to be spent to cover production costs which include royalty, scripts, cos- tumes, scenery, lighting, sound, and special effects, making each show expensive to produce. For those who saw Heaven Can Wait and Dracula, you will admit that the quality was there and the ticket price was worth your entertainment value, Yetwelostmoney on both shows and if the trend continues, there will not be a drama department at Kanab High. Let me tell you why this concerns me. I ve always been an advocate for music education and proudly state that 94 percent of all national honor students play musical instruments.
